When Purity Unites Hearts

15. The Buried Secret

The night wind whispered softly across the estate's front lawn. Yet to Fahri, the air felt suffocatingly heavy.

The man standing on the threshold wasn't a stranger. He wasn't merely a blast from the distant past. He was a living vault holding the darkest chapters of Fahri's unwritten history—a companion who had walked step-for-step beside him during the years he lived entirely detached from his faith.

His name was Rizal.

And his sudden materialization dragged long-buried phantoms straight up to the surface.

"Rizal," Fahri murmured, his voice tight.

The man flashed a thin, razor-sharp smile. "Good to see you still remember."

It was impossible not to. Rizal had been Fahri’s closest confidant during his unanchored years. They had burned through countless nights in underground clubs, careened through reckless depravity, and locked arms while signing off on choices they later grew to despise—though Fahri was the only one who had truly sought redemption.

Judging by the hardened, unrepentant glint in Rizal's eyes, that transformation hadn't touched his former friend.

"What do you want?" Fahri demanded coldly.

Rizal's gaze drifted past Fahri's shoulder into the bright foyer, a mocking smile curving his lips. "Aren't you going to invite an old friend inside?"

Fahri froze. Every internal alarm screamed that this visitor carried toxic cargo.

Before Fahri could slam the door shut, Aisyah’s voice drifted softly from behind him. "Please, come in."

Fahri snapped his head around. Aisyah stood a few paces back. Though her composure looked remarkably steady, she could viscerally feel the static electricity charging the air.

Rizal stepped past them with casual arrogance, moving as though he owned the estate.

Minutes later.

They occupied the formal sitting area. Aisyah dutifully served tea and refreshments, though a knot of raw dread tightened around her ribs. She had never witnessed Fahri this rigid—not even when Nabila first crossed their threshold.

Rizal surveyed the grand living room, whistling softly. "Well, well. Look at you. Absolute luxury."

Fahri remained dead silent.

"Word on the street is you've transformed into a pious religious teacher now," Rizal added, letting out a dry, condescending laugh.

The sarcastic bite embedded in the delivery made Aisyah wince. Yet Fahri refused to take the bait, his expression carved from stone. "State your business, Rizal."

Rizal leaned back against the plush velvet. "Just dropping by to catch up with an old brother."

"We stopped being brothers a lifetime ago."

Rizal's smile flickered, turning brittle for a microsecond before he recovered. "You've certainly changed."

"Alhamdulillah," Fahri replied flatly.

Rizal chuckled darkly. "I miss the old Fahri."

Fahri locked eyes with him, devoid of warmth. "And I thank Allah every day that the old Fahri is dead."

The declaration dropped an absolute vacuum of sound across the room. Aisyah, listening quietly, felt a profound wave of awe wash over her, sharply realizing the sheer magnitude of the transformation her husband had fought through.

After a tense beat of silence, Rizal reached into his leather satchel, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and tossed it casually onto the coffee table.

"I'm just a courier," Rizal muttered. "Deliver a package. That's my only job tonight."

Fahri's stomach churned. "Sent by whom?" Though he already knew the answer.

"Nabila," Rizal answered smoothly.

Fahri’s knuckles turned white as he clenched his fists, while Aisyah felt her heart hammer a violent rhythm against her ribs.

"What's inside?" Fahri pressed.

Rizal shrugged indifferently. "Open it and find out."

With zero alternatives remaining, Fahri reached forward, sliced the seal, and pulled the contents free.

A collection of photographs slid out onto the polished wood.

The moment Fahri's eyes scanned the images, the color drained completely from his face, leaving him ghostly white.

These weren't the mild social frames Nabila had weaponized previously. These were infinitely worse.

Photographs snapped during his deepest descent into self-destruction. Late-night warehouse parties. Reckless altercations. Compromising moments from a lifestyle he had spent years trying to erase from existence.

Aisyah stepped closer, catching sight of the images.

She froze solid.

Not driven by white-hot fury. But paralyzed by absolute shock. Because this exposed a brutal, unvarnished tier of Fahri’s past she had never imagined existed.

Rizal tracked their reactions, a smug smirk settling across his face. "Nabila's message is simple," he drawled. "A wife deserves complete transparency, right down to the ugly bedrock."

"Get out," Fahri growled, his voice dropping into an arctic register.

Rizal blinked in feigned surprise. "Pardon?"

"Get out of my house."

Rizal let out a mocking laugh. "What's the matter? Truth stings?"

"Get out!" Fahri thundered, surging to his feet with an intensity that shook the room.

Rizal locked eyes with him for a tense second, then slowly rose to his feet. "Alright, I'm going." He offered a parting, venomous glance toward Aisyah. "Just remember... there's plenty more where that came from. You barely know the man you married."

With that parting shot, Rizal turned on his heel and strode out, slamming the front door behind him.

The heavy thud of the door echoed into silence.

The photographs lay scattered across the table like discarded confessions of a ghost.

Fahri stood motionless, completely paralyzed, lacking any roadmap on how to bridge the chasm before him. Aisyah remained seated with her chin bowed, a storm of turbulent thoughts racing through her mind.

Yet the dominant emotion anchoring her chest wasn't anger. It was profound, aching sorrow.

Not for herself—but for the man standing before her, violently dragged back into the chains of a history he desperately wanted to leave behind.

"Aisyah," Fahri whispered, his voice cracking.

The young woman slowly lifted her face. The sight of shimmering tears pooling in her husband's eyes dealt a physical blow to her heart.

"I am so sorry," Fahri choked out.

Aisyah gave a slow shake of her head. "You haven't wronged me."

"I dragged all of this filth directly into your sanctuary." His shoulders trembled slightly.

For the very first time since their wedding day, Fahri looked entirely shattered. And seeing him stripped of his armor caused Aisyah's remaining defenses to dissolve completely.

As the midnight hour deepened.

After an extended, heavy silence in the room, Aisyah finally broke the quiet. "I need to ask you something."

Fahri nodded slowly, bracing himself. "Anything."

Aisyah drew in a long, centering breath. "Is there... any other secret hiding in the dark that I don't know about?"

The question hit the room like a dead stop. This was the ultimate fault line: Trust.

Fahri knew with absolute certainty that his response would dictate whether their marriage survived the night.

He fell silent for a long, agonizing stretch. Then, he bowed his head, gathering every fragment of his remaining courage.

"There is one thing."

Aisyah's pulse spiked into a frantic drumbeat. "What is it?"

Fahri kept his eyes pinned to the floorboards. "Something even my mother doesn't know."

The temperature in the room dropped instantly. Aisyah laced her fingers tightly together in her lap, bracing for impact.

When Fahri finally forced his gaze back up, his eyes were bloodshot.

"Before I changed... my actions indirectly caused someone to go to prison."

Aisyah's breath caught in her throat. The air turned to ice.

"I didn't pull the trigger or execute the crime alone," Fahri confessed, his voice breaking. "But I was an active, culpable part of it."

The world seemed to halt its rotation for Aisyah. This wasn't merely a messy breakup or vintage party photographs. This was structural, legal wreckage. A felony from his past.

And reading the raw horror etched across Fahri's face, she understood a terrifying reality: this was the ultimate skeleton guarding his closet—the singular secret that had terrorized his conscience for years.

Across town inside her high-rise apartment.

Nabila sat sipping hot coffee, a serene smile resting on her lips.

Her phone buzzed—an incoming text alert from Rizal.

"Mission accomplished."

A triumphant smile broke across her face. She tapped out a brief reply: "Splendid."

Then, she switched applications, unlocking a heavily encrypted digital archive on her laptop.

Contained within its directory sat court transcripts and confidential police dockets. Legal records connected directly to the dark chapter Fahri had just confessed to Aisyah. Buried evidence. Sleeping litigation capable of annihilating Fahri's corporate empire and dragging him into federal ruin if leaked to the public.

Nabila stared at the glowing screen, her eyes narrowing into cold daggers.

"Let's see if your storybook marriage survives the truth," she whispered into the dark.

The malicious campaign she had meticulously engineered had finally breached the inner sanctum.

And completely unknown to Fahri and Aisyah...

The dead past had clawed its way out of the grave, armed for a final, catastrophic reckoning.
