Dark Progression
30. Returning Home
The simple black carriage carrying Rian rattled along the cobblestone trails beyond the capital’s borders, enduring a multi-week journey slicing through ancient forests, jagged cliffs, and green valleys he had once crossed alone on his maiden departure to the academy. Yet this homecoming bore no resemblance to the boy who had first left.
Along the border trade routes, news regarding the collapse of the corrupt faction's conspiracy at Astrea Academy and the annihilation of the dark sect’s forces had spread like wildfire among local lords. Though Rian had spurned the title of Grand Duke offered by the crown, whispers of the "Shadow Judge" who had saved the realm compelled nobles and district chiefs across his route to quietly dispatch secret outriders, ensuring his carriage traversed their domains unmolested.
After a long voyage testing his patience, the familiar architecture of nature finally breached the horizon. Giant oak trees with sprawling, verdant canopies, crystal-clear streams cutting through the basin, and a crisp morning breeze welcomed the carriage home.
Oakhaven Village.
The birthplace of everything—the place where his family’s dilapidated shack once stood on the fringe of the woods, where childhood memories saturated in blood and suffering had first forged the soul of an ex-mercenary.
The black carriage drew to a halt at the edge of the village dirt path. The driver respectfully unlatched the cabin door. Rian stepped down, smoothed the folds of his dark coat, and walked down the village lane, which now seemed infinitely more peaceful than it had years ago.
A few villagers laboring outside cast curious glances his way. Though they failed to recognize the eleven-year-old youth beneath the deep cowl of his cloak, an aura of utter gravity and unshakeable serenity radiated from his strides, causing anyone who crossed his path to instinctively step aside and bow their heads.
Rian pressed onward until he reached the village outskirts, the plot where his dilapidated birthplace once stood.
Yet the sight awaiting him today bore no resemblance to the past. The rotting, drafty wooden shack of his memories had completely vanished, replaced by a sturdy, pristine, two-story timber home surrounded by a neat wooden fence and fertile vegetable gardens. It stood as the tangible fruit of the gold coins and absolute shadow-wards Rian had covertly funneled through his underground network during his years at the academy.
Rian paused at the wooden gate. His heartbeat struck a rhythm distinct from its usual cadence—not the thumping pulse of a mercenary bracing for battlefield slaughter, but the raw, emotional tremor of a child returning to his kin.
Suddenly, the front door swung wide.
A middle-aged woman with soft brown hair, dressed in simple rural attire, emerged carrying a basket of dry laundry. Her features had aged slightly, etched with the faint lines of exhaustion born from years of past anguish. Yet the moment her gaze locked onto the hooded figure standing by the gate, her footsteps slammed to a halt. The basket slipped from her slack fingers, tumbling toward the earth.
"Rian...?" his mother whispered, her voice trembling violently.
Rian lowered his cowl, revealing features sharpened by time, framed by blood-red eyes carrying a rare, profound warmth. He smiled faintly. "Mother... I'm home."
No further words were necessary. His mother broke into a frantic run down the porch steps, abandoning her spilled laundry, and hurled herself forward to wrap him in a desperate, suffocating embrace. Tears of pure joy instantly soaked the shoulder of Rian's coat. She clung to her son as though terrified the midnight wind might snatch him away once more.
"My boy... oh gods, you've grown so much..." Sobs broke from his mother's chest against his chest, pouring out years of bottled-up longing and silent terror.
Hearing the commotion outside, Rian's father hurried through the front door with heavy, rushed steps. The sturdy, broad-shouldered middle-aged man froze on the threshold, staring at his wife and son locked in an embrace on the lawn. His usually harsh, weathered expression gradually softened, melting into a wide, fiercely proud smile. He strode forward, drawing them both into a unified, unbreakable family embrace.
That day, the atmosphere within the new Oakhaven home brimmed with a warmth they had never known. The dining table groaned beneath a proper meal, and soft laughter echoed through the sitting room.
Rian verified with his own eyes that his family now lived safely, comfortably, and securely beneath a permanent grid of shadow magic woven across the property. No greedy aristocrat or dark sect zealot would ever dare lay a finger on his kin while he still drew breath in this world.
Night fell.
Silence blanketed the peaceful village of Oakhaven. Upstairs in his second-story bedroom within the new home, Rian's parents slept deeply, resting soundly in an untroubled peace free from the nightmares and dread that had once haunted their nights.
Rian stood alone beside his wide-open window. A gentle night breeze drifted inward, fluttering the hem of his dark coat. The night sky above the village remained crystal clear, anchored by a silver crescent moon casting a cold, lucid glow across the earth.
Though his family was safe and the immediate kingdom threat had been scrubbed clean, Rian's mind refused to find absolute rest.
Deep within his coat pocket, the clandestine letter from the shadow organization across the western sea pulsed with a faint, steady vibration, harmonizing with the internal circulation of his meridian pathways.
Rian stared intently toward the pitch-black western horizon in the distance. Beyond that vast ocean, a foreign continent called his name, harboring deeper mysteries, stronger foes, and a fresh destiny waiting to be carved with the edge of his shadow blade.
The journey of the Shadow Judge had only just begun.
