Frost Circle

23. The Frost Circle's Reaction

TICK. TICK.

The cheap wall clock in Arif's boarding room ticked lazily toward the crucial seconds of 11:59 PM. The Jakarta night air outside the window fell suddenly still, as if the entire city were holding its breath, watching a fragment of destiny hang in the balance within that cramped, nine-square-meter cell.

Arif remained kneeling on the cement floor. His hands gripped the smartphone, its screen beginning to flicker, displaying his mother's final smile before the spatial distortion severed the inter-island network. The warmth of the mother's forgiving words still pulsed deep within his chest, dismantling the last remnants of the pride that had isolated his soul from home for years.

Right as the second hand struck twelve—the starting point that usually brought searing pain, a jarring spatial shockwave, and a forced hurling back to 6:00 AM—a massive anomaly occurred.

WHOOSH!

The Frost Circle ring on his left ring finger suddenly vibrated violently. The ancient ice-crystal carvings across its surface flared brilliantly, radiating an intensely bitter frost. That cold was so massive that the cement floor beneath Arif's knees instantly sheeted over with a shimmering white layer of frost. Arif's breath exhaled in a thin puff of vapor into the room's air, its temperature plummeting instantly.

Yet there was no pain. The dread that usually stalked every passage of days had vanished entirely. Arif stared at his ring finger with pure, awestruck wonder.

CRACK... CRACK...

A crisp, sharp fracturing sound echoed through the silent room. The geometric ice patterns that had stood sturdy across hundreds of loops, locking the ring's silver metal in place, slowly began to fracture. Those fracture lines spiderwebbed outward, splitting the mystical structure holding Arif's timeline captive.

The object wasn't attacking him. It was reacting to his heart.

"This object freezes your mistakes... until your heart finds true warmth," Arif whispered softly, repeating the old beggar's decree as a tear slipped slowly down onto the frozen cement floor.

The moment Arif's sincere tear touched the frosted surface, that bitter chill abruptly reversed course. The cracks on the Frost Circle ring widened further, and from its fissures, the freezing blue-ice glow gradually morphed into an exceptionally soft, warm, golden-white luminescence.

The ice melted. The cursed pattern locking the eternal Thursday in Jakarta began to evaporate, releasing its particles into drifting, beautiful motes of warm light that filled the dim boarding room. Thousands of those glowing specks danced through the air, erasing the room's musty odor, dissolving the tension in the atmosphere, and wrapping Arif's kneeling form in a soothing metaphysical embrace.

Arif looked up, gazing at his room now filled with a constellation of golden light. An extraordinarily massive sense of peace—a spiritual serenity he had never experienced in his entire life—crept into every fiber of his consciousness. The heavy burden on his shoulders from chasing deadlines, the fear of poverty, the ambition to exact revenge on Pak Malik, and the guilt weighing on him for his mother were utterly melted away without a trace by the warmth of those glowing specks.

Arif's soul, hardened like ice across hundreds of loops, had softened entirely. He felt the pure forgiveness of the universe. That time cage held him no longer because its padlock—his own arrogance—had shattered into a million pieces.

The phone in his hand slowly dimmed, drawing the visual of the rural porch into a tranquil darkness. Alongside the fading golden-white light inside the room, an overwhelming yet deeply blissful wave of drowsiness washed over Arif's eyelids. This wasn't the fatigue of physical exhaustion after fifteen hours chasing trains and taxis; this was the sleepiness of a soul that had finally found its way home after wandering endlessly through an empty void.

Arif lowered his body slowly onto the thin, sheetless mattress. This time, the bed didn't feel hard or stuffy. Every fiber of its kapok stuffing felt as soft as a bank of clouds welcoming him with open arms.

The fingers of his left hand relaxed completely. The Frost Circle ring on his finger had now turned into a simple, plain silver band, shedding all its mystical power as its mission had reached completion. The metal felt warm against his skin.

"Thank you..." Arif whispered into the beautiful, silent night, before his eyes closed completely with a lingering, perfect smile curved across his lips.

He drifted off to sleep in absolute stillness, letting his consciousness sink into peaceful darkness, fully prepared to welcome whatever greeted his eyes when they opened once more.
