Legend of the Lightning Strike
20. A Warrior Must Be Vigilant
Attacks from the test squad continued to come. Alicia was with several of her companions. There were 10 of them, including Midan. They were able to fight evenly, with the attackers coming in shifts. The testers attacked from various angles with wooden swords.
Alicia easily restored her vision, raising her sword upward, and their visibility was unimpeded by the fog at all.
Woosh!
The 10 meters in front and behind them were clear of energy fog; it was a barrier to nullify magical attacks. So, as long as they remained within the magic-nulling circle, they could see their enemies.
However, the assassins assigned to the immobilization task still possessed powerful abilities, so they had to fight tooth and nail to survive. Despite the light, their opponents were numerous and targeted the weakest.
Alicia struggled to protect the others, despite their good cooperation. The attackers' abilities were at least level 6 or 7 for assassins. Their stealth was nearly flawless, and they were undetectable even if they were ordinary people; they were invisible.
Alicia's sword deflected attacks from three attackers simultaneously. Their movements were swift, but Alicia's abilities had already reached the late stages of level 7. Alicia was just waiting for a breakthrough to advance in rank.
Trang! Trang!
The force of the impact was overwhelming, and Alicia tried to protect her teammates, aided by Midan's attack with his bow artifact. His bow itself was forged from an extremely strong and flexible material capable of withstanding any attack. Midan had also become one with his bow, allowing him to fire arrows with the energy weapons he had created.
Similar to the energy shards released from his bow, they could inflict wounds, both large and small, depending on the energy released.
An attacker found an opening, but Midan retreated and advanced. While dodging the attack from the attacker, he still managed to release an energy arrow to assist Alicia.
Whoosh!
The attacker's attack failed, blocked by the energy from Midan's swift bow. The other eight, despite their inferior abilities, held their ground desperately and tried to close in on Alicia and Midan.
The attackers gave them no chance; many had already fallen, so they helped their teammates take down the remaining contestants.
To their right and left, everyone was busy fighting. Alicia herself understood that she could create a barrier or array, preventing the enemy from breaking through. However, doing so would be tantamount to making the test very easy by simply defending. She understood that the purpose of this test was to prepare them to become Heavenly Troops.
A force specialized in fighting to eradicate evil across the continent. A force from an alliance of all the world's warriors. If the ones who passed were weak, that would be the problem.
Alicia had to withstand the attack with her abilities, not with her magical techniques.
Midan was able to fight and protect his comrades, and Alicia was also helped. The other warriors were starting to tire, and an attacker managed to strike one of them in the back.
Bang!
The warrior fell. Midan tried to help and was about to lift him, but the attackers charged in front of him, causing him to retreat. The fallen man was immediately picked up by one of the attackers and quickly carried away to a hole in the Colosseum wall.
There were only nine of them left; more than ten attackers charged back. Fighting while protecting was indeed quite difficult for Alicia and Midan. The laws of nature also apply. Those with lower abilities eventually fell. Alicia had to fight the attackers and couldn't protect her comrades.
Alicia didn't want to use her magic because that would have helped them in the second test, but what about the third test? Let them fight on their own, because becoming a Celestial Troop carried great risks.
After a fierce battle of about half an hour, only four of Alicia's group remained. The four were: Alicia, Midan, Domar, and Rosa. They were still able to keep up by attacking the attackers. Anyone who fell, whether from the participants or the examiners, was immediately carried away. A dedicated officer was tasked with evacuating any fallen participants.
This was a form of first aid; this test was truly a test of survival, and anyone who fell was deemed to have failed their Sky Troops.
Domar was a typical forward attacker, his resilience unwavering. Midan was the rear attacker, protecting Domar and launching attacks. Alicia was also able to defend herself against several attackers. Furthermore, Rosa was a support, providing additional energy, so the three surrounding her felt their energy surge.
They were able to keep up with the attackers, even knocking them back and taking their attacks. It was highly likely that these four would pass the survival test.
This was what Leader Gonan observed from a distance. He could clearly see everything behind the dense fog of energy he created. He saw that many had fallen, both among the participants and the examiners tasked with incapacitating them with their wooden swords.
In fact, some of the examiners who had infiltrated as participants were also able to incapacitate many warriors by launching surprise attacks from behind. It was the participants' own fault if they failed and fell. It was because they weren't vigilant.
A warrior must be vigilant, no matter the circumstances and whatever attack might come their way. True warriors maintain a high level of vigilance, even toward those they consider allies.
Forming teams for this test was to test their vigilance against surprise attacks. Therefore, forming teams wasn't often about making it easier to fight, but rather to assess the participants' vigilance.
On the other hand, Nagada's original 40 participants were now down to only five. Nagada hadn't expected so many infiltrators on his team.
The infiltrators numbered more than two and attacked their own comrades, causing them to fall into the mist. Nagada didn't realize who her attackers were, but when they attacked, she overpowered them and even knocked them down. A team immediately took them away for transport.
Five remained: Nagada, Sanjo, Yara, Nanji, and Samuel. They possessed abilities beyond those of the other participants. They were able to hold their own against two attackers at once and inflict minor injuries on them.
In this test, they learned that they were not to kill each other; they could only incapacitate. Like the attackers, they didn't kill, and there was no killing aura whatsoever. They all worked solely on orders to incapacitate, so a special officer took the injured for immediate treatment.
Because this mission was survival, they had to be able to survive in the fog and attacks that were almost invisible to the naked eye without obstruction. This is the foundation of a warrior, where their senses are needed for combat acumen, tactics, and prioritizing initiative. Their mentality for the real battle ahead is key to resisting the forces of darkness.
