Naura's Tears
1. He's Gone Crazy
This is a legendary love story, a never-ending love story, a love as deep as the ocean.
"Crazy for Love! Crazy! Crazy Adam!"
This is the story of a man who always looks at his lover with a smile, even though his lover is nowhere in sight. Worse, his lover is already taken by someone else.
The children shout at the man who walks without seeing anything but his love in his eyes. Children playing on the side of the road play marbles and shout, "Crazy." The shouts are directed at a thin man walking past them. The man, wearing a shabby peci (traditional Islamic cap), walks with a smile, heading towards a place that holds memories of him and his lover.
Behind the man who was called crazy, a young man appears to be following him. The man's name is Syarif. Syarif is a friend of the man who was called crazy; he follows his friend. He looks after him because their friendship was very strong during their time at the Islamic boarding school. Syarif couldn't imagine his friend becoming like this because of love. He was truly crazy about it!
The man was Adam, a childhood friend who had always been with Syarif. They also attended the same Islamic boarding school, struggled together, and studied together. In fact, Adam was Syarif's only best friend. Adam always tutored Syarif when he fell behind in class or felt lazy.
Adam had always been a role model for Syarif when he was studying. Adam always motivated him to study. Adam was devout in his religious studies; he had a lot of knowledge, and that made Syarif consider him a role model. However, this time was different. He had changed because of the strange love he experienced.
Adam was being tested by Allah; he had suffered a deep wound. To the point where he couldn't control his own body. He felt as if he had lost his soul, his body emaciated. If someone said he was skin wrapped around bones, perhaps that was apt considering Adam's current condition.
Syarif passed by children playing and checking on Adam. As usual, Syarif refused to accept his friend being teased by the children. "You're not allowed to insult other people! Watch out if you insult Adam again!" Syarif raised his hand and opened all his fingers. He hoped to scare the children and discourage them from checking on others.
The little children covered their mouths. They were afraid of Syarif's words. Clearly, Syarif was a brave young man.
Syarif continued to follow Adam's carefree steps. His friend was truly mad with love. For some reason, love is so extraordinary that it can bring a person to such a state.
He wouldn't eat unless fed by his mother, Halimah. This was the strange love story Adam had to face. He only felt physically moved when Sunday came. When Sunday came, he would stir and get out of his bedroom and walk tirelessly.
He would head to a small lake at the end of the village. Syarif and the villagers called it Love Lake. Originally, the lake was called Kenang Lake, but because it witnessed Adam's infatuation with Kenang Lake, it was renamed Love Lake. Syarif followed Adam on foot. He parked his motorcycle at Adam's house, and today he wanted to just walk with him.
Adam continued walking, navigating the village roads, and finally, they arrived at Lake Kenang.
Adam was still smiling and standing on the edge of the lake. He looked at the lake's surface, so clear because it was preserved and unpolluted by industry.
It was truly a cool and beautiful view.
Unfortunately, Syarif knew that what Adam saw there wasn't natural beauty. He was looking at his lover's face on the surface of the lake, surely imagining the woman he loved dearly, dead or alive.
The woman Adam loved was Naura. A figure who had always graced Adam's heart. The two loved each other; Syarif understood their love story well.
Unfortunately, fate wasn't on their side. Their relationship ended; they, who always met at Lake Kenang, were separated by the splendor of the world. Naura chose to leave Adam and marry a wealthy man.
Adam never stopped loving Naura, even when she left him. Adam seemed unable to believe reality, to the point where he lost consciousness, only uttering Naura's name with every breath.
Because of this, many residents and those who knew Adam's condition called him a man driven mad by love.
How miserable is your fate, my friend?
That was what weighed on Syarif's mind. A friend through thick and thin, even now, Syarif always accompanied Adam on Sundays. Adam always thought about going to Kenanga Lake. Even though Adam himself had difficulty walking because he often refused to eat.
Every Monday through Saturday, Adam stayed in his room. He never ate unless his mother, Halimah, forced him to. And every day, he only mourned and cried, calling Naura's name from his helpless and weak lips.
Adam continued to stare at the surface of Kenanga Lake. He turned around, looking happy. He sat on a bamboo chair under a densely leafy guava tree. It was so cool, Adam didn't care about anything; he just stared at Kenanga Lake and enjoyed Sunday in silence, and he would return home when evening came.
"Realize it, my friend, Adam. Naura will never come back to you. Let her go and live your life as before, always cheerful and full of enthusiasm."
Those words escaped Syarif's mouth. He couldn't bear to see Adam's suffering. His best friend was always called crazy. No! He wasn't; he just wasn't ready to accept his situation. It had been a year since Naura's marriage to someone else.
Since then, Adam had been lifeless. He was like a living corpse, smiling and softly calling Naura's name.
"Naura..."
Adam's voice was hoarse and soft. Syarif heard it.
"Adam... was only created for Naura, no one else."
The sound of the gentle breeze and its gentle breeze made his face cool. By the lake, a beautiful, peaceful place could be found.
"Come to your senses, Adam!" Syarif couldn't bear it anymore, and he spoke a little loudly, so Adam would hear him and come to his senses. He had to accept the fact that the woman he loved had betrayed him. So, what else could he hope for except to come to his senses and live life well?
"You have to realize, Naura isn't for you! Poor mother, who can only cry every day over your miserable fate, Adam!"
Syarif held his hair and tossed it, a sign of his anger and sadness. His best friend, how could he have fallen so deeply in love?
"Syarif..." The words fell softly from Adam's lips.
Syarif listened intently to Adam's next words. Adam himself was still smiling and gazing at Lake Kenanga. He only smiled on Sundays, and on other days, he would remain silent, crying and wasting his tears in his cramped room.
"Naura will return... Adam will forever belong only to Naura," Adam's soft voice echoed again. He simply smiled and continued gazing at Lake Kenanga, smiling as he did so. Adam seemed to have lost all concern for the world and its contents; all he could think about was Naura and everything about her.
What kind of madness in love was this? Syarif couldn't even fathom it.
Huff! Syarif was speechless; he was sure that one day, Adam would regain consciousness. Syarif exhaled slowly, trying to calm himself. He leaned against the guava tree beside Adam, who was still sitting.
A strange love story. A love story that leaves someone blind and sick. Blind because they can't see anything but their lover, or sick because they can't taste food and become emaciated.
This love is a love that's very difficult to understand. Adam, driven mad by love, tells the love story between him and Naura. A story that fate didn't bless. Syarif remembers that day, the day Adam's love failed.
