Naura's Tears

3. I Can't Live Without You, Naura

Thunderbolts struck Adam's mind that afternoon. He never expected the woman he had always adored and loved with all his heart to say something that would leave him feeling weak and without the energy to live.

How could Adam live without Nuara? It was like the day couldn't live without the sun. Adam didn't even want to hear Naura's jokes anymore, because he found them completely unfunny and ruining his entire life. He would rather die than hear that from the woman he had always adored.

Adam covered his ears, "I don't want to hear it, Naura... don't say that again, Naura... my life is for you, Naura, my love is only for you, Naura, my happiness is you, Naura." Adam was still slumped, his hands reaching out to Naura. Naura was still wiping away her tears.

It seemed like Naura was struggling to continue. She seemed forced to do so, but Naura tried to be strong and made Adam realize that they were not meant to be together. Naura also had to be strong, knowing she had to end her relationship with him today.

"Don't joke around anymore, Naura. This isn't funny," Adam's face turned pleading.

"Enough, Adam!" Naura raised her voice, "Forget Naura. She's no longer in your heart. Let's end our relationship, Adam," Naura's voice was a little louder, wanting to convince Adam not to continue whining and making it difficult for him to resolve their issues.

Naura stared at Adam's face, still collapsed on the ground, his eyes steadfast and determined. Adam still couldn't believe it, his eyes dull and pleading.

"No, Naura. Forever..."

"Enough, Adam! Accept the truth. I don't love you anymore, Adam," Naura's voice was now firm. Adam didn't continue his sentence; he stared silently at Naura's face, the marble face he always remembered every night before going to sleep, and always prayed for her well-being.

"Naura... I..." Adam's voice trembled, very softly, "I..."

"Enough, Naura! Leave her!" A firm, middle-aged man's voice suddenly appeared and approached them. It was Mr. Hasan, Naura's father.

Hasan grabbed his daughter's arm. "Listen, Adam! Forget my daughter. Tomorrow, Sunday, is her wedding. She's marrying Sandi, a rich man from the city. Do you realize, Adam, you're poor, and what are you going to feed other people's children? Forget Naura forever!"

Hasan glared at his daughter. "You're taking a long time to talk. You should just talk to her directly. Come on, go home and prepare for your wedding." Hasan pulled his daughter's arm, and Naura followed her father's lead.

A few steps away from Adam, Naura looked back and saw Adam still sitting on the grass, staring at her. Their eyes met, Adam's hands still outstretched toward her. Adam's face looked pitiful, tears welling up in his eyes.

Adam... I'm sorry, live well. Naura left Adam's gaze and followed her father, hoping he would find someone who could replace him and take good care of him. Her tears couldn't be held back, falling all the way, leaving her heart shattered into pieces.

Adam continued to stare at Naura, his eyes seemingly glued to her as she left him. He refused to let go until they disappeared with the roar of Hasan's motorcycle.

Adam was left alone, accompanied by the sounds of birds and animals seeking Allah's sustenance. Everyone was happy on this Sunday, perhaps only Adam seemed to make this Sunday the greatest disaster in the world. Adam still couldn't believe what he had just experienced. It was like a dream, like an illusion, like the world had suddenly gone completely silent.

Adam slowly stood up, silently and expressionless. He walked slowly, two steps to the bamboo chair. Adam slowly sat down, still expressionless. His gaze was fixed on the clear water of Kenanga Lake, as clear as glass, so clear that the fish swimming could be seen playing in it.

However, that wasn't all Adam saw. Adam only saw Naura's pristine face in the water. Her beautiful, shining marble face seemed to smile in the clear water, and Adam smiled back at Naura's visible smile. Right! It's Sunday, Nand aura is always with me on Sundays. Adam smiled. No matter what, he was happy with Naura, let it be with her forever.

"Naura... I can't live without you," Adam's voice sounded soft. Adam smiled again because Naura's face, outlined on the surface of the water, seemed to smile and liked Adam's words.

And then, the sun began to rise, rising steadily until it dipped. Before he knew it, it was almost dark. Maghrib was approaching, but Adam was still smiling and gazing at the crystal clear Kenanga Lake, as clear as Naura's face, which Adam saw on the water's surface.

"Oh God, Adam!" A loud voice rang out from afar, "Why aren't you home, Adam? Your mother is looking for you!" The man turned off his motorcycle, and a woman was also riding with him.

It was Syarif, Adam's best friend since childhood. Syarif had taken Mrs. Halimah on his motorcycle, worried that Adam hadn't returned home by the afternoon. Halimah approached Syarif, who usually only stayed at Syarif's house when Adam was away.

Syarif and Mrs. Halimah hurried over to Adam, who was silently staring at the lake's surface.

"Son, why are you here all the time? Why aren't you home, Adam?" Halimah's voice sounded restless, and she looked at her only son's face. Adam didn't answer, only smiling as he looked out at the lake.

"Adam. What's wrong, son?" Halimah began to notice something strange about Adam. He didn't answer, just smiled and stared straight out at the lake. "Adam, will you answer me, son?"

Still no response, Halimah began to understand her son's sadness. Something had happened; could it be Naura? What Halimah had feared all this time might actually happen, that was what Halimah thought now. She understood Adam's delicate feelings well. Halimah had cared for him since he was in her womb. Her husband died when Adam was still in the womb. Halimah raised him alone, and now, did she really understand who they were?

Halimah felt weak. She sat on the grass, her hands holding her son's knees, who was still sitting on a bamboo chair, staring at the lake, still smiling.

"My son, Adam... forget Naura... you're a strong child, son," Halimah burst into tears. "Adam..."

Syarif looked at Mother Halimah in confusion. He began to wonder what had happened. Was Naura the cause? Adam... you have to be strong, Syarif prayed for Adam.

However, Adam remained unmoved. His smile remained intact, gazing at the clear lake and at Naura's smile. His happiness and life were only with Naura.

The sky bore witness that a love that had sunk so deeply might have no antidote until the end of time. Darkness began to creep in; only Halimah's cries could still be heard softly.

Halimah's cries seemed to break the evening atmosphere, the voice of a woman who had become a mother to Adam. A sadness that had prevented him from even smiling since that day.
