Naura's Tears

31. An Unexpected Encounter

Naura was pensive in her living room. For some reason, her thoughts had been a mess lately since her husband married his secretary, Firla. It had been five months since she became an old wife, but Sandi hadn't even come home to provide for her. He preferred to be with his younger wife all the time because of her second wife's beauty and style.

Naura felt abandoned; her husband only came home occasionally to pick up clothes or for other household needs. Other than that, he would be at his second wife's house.

Naura felt like a bird in a cage. Every time her husband came home, she wanted to tell him that she had accepted his remarriage. But he wanted to ignore her and treat her like his wife before. However, Adam was angry and uncaring. He said he would sleep at Firla's house, who understood him.

So, was she as clueless as Firla? Hadn't she always been a wife who accepted everything her husband did, even when he always came home late at night, who knew where he was, or sometimes only returned early in the morning? Naura was always patient, yet she was still being called clueless?

Who knows, now Naura feels like a prisoner.

Naura is now reminded of Adam. Adam, whose love has betrayed him, what is he doing now? The beautiful feelings of the past, when she was always with him every Sunday at Kenanga Lake, always come back to her.

I hope you're happy, Adam. Moreover, a beautiful woman even loves you, Diandra. That's what Naura is thinking now, for some reason, jealousy still lingers. Naura immediately forgets it; now she's Sandi's wife, and she must be able to put all her feelings for Adam aside.

Naura, for some reason, feels bored today. She desperately wants to get out of the house, occasionally getting some fresh air and looking for a place to relax. There's nothing else but Kenanga Lake.

It's the most beautiful place in the world, in her opinion.

Naura gets ready. She puts on her best long dress and her white headscarf. She gets ready and says goodbye to Aunt Fatma to go out for some fresh air.

Aunt Fatma only asks Naura to be careful. Sure enough, Aunt Fatma knows exactly how Naura feels and feels right now. Fatma understood that Naura also needed some fresh air to restore her confidence and calm.

Naura hurried, hopping on her personal automatic motorcycle. She set off alone, eager to experience the breeze of Kenanga Lake, where she used to visit frequently. What was it like now? Perhaps it was still as quiet as before, with the surrounding neglected plantations, the serenity, and the crystal-clear water.

It truly made her miss it. Naura kept driving, eager to arrive soon and, as if with wings, fly across the world. She felt the breeze, the breath of the beautiful nature. It was worth it for her to leave the house.

Adam inspected the construction that had been underway for five months. He was satisfied that a building consultant and a business consultant, both of whom frequently visited the Kenanga Lake crime scene.

In fact, both consultants were delighted with the beauty of the lake. They even wanted to buy one of the properties there in the future to prepare for retirement or as an investment.

Adnan and Burhan both deeply appreciated Adam's thoughtfulness, as in the long run, the place would be very busy and a tremendous asset. Adam is credited with creating a new, untouched location for business and tourism.

Adam remains humble, explaining that it was merely a coincidence and a sharing session with friends and family. Furthermore, he received valuable support from prominent figures like Diandra, who consistently supported his business and funding efforts. They inspected each site as it began construction, especially the headquarters or central unit, which served as the primary point of contact for monitoring all aspects of the project.

The space needed to be representative and enjoyable.

The central office space was designed to be close to nature, even resembling nature. A pond surrounds the space, adorned with plants and an aquarium. Furthermore, the seating arrangement wasn't like an office, but rather a playground. The walls were decorated with colorful carvings and sculptures. This allowed workers to freely gaze out at nature, opening their minds, rather than being confined to a room.

A brilliant idea, two consultants understood Adam's intentions and prepared the final construction phase. The foundation and steelwork were already in place, leaving only a few finishing touches. This work was expedited by bringing in skilled workers and construction workers.

Adam moved on to the hotel building, which officially had a sign. The management of the Surga Hotel would be made Sharia-compliant. Adam inspected the project alone while the other consultants were visiting the residential property. Adam saw that the hotel had already entered its second floor. Furthermore, a garden was being prepared around it, which would be used to plant special trees mentioned in the Quran, such as figs, olives, date palms, and so on.

Adam was satisfied that everyone was working. The land was cleared, and some trees were still standing and being prepared for reforestation. However, those affected by the construction map had to be pruned.

Adam moved on to the planning area for the playground, language park, and water park. Everything was proceeding smoothly and seamlessly. Having a partner like Diandra was certainly a blessing, as Diandra possessed untold wealth.

The heat was starting to heat up. Diandra seemed to be nowhere to be seen, perhaps somewhere else overseeing the construction. Never mind, I'll go to the lake for a bit to rest, look at the water, and feel the cool breeze. Adam thought, and he headed there.

Adam finally arrived at the lake. It was still shady and cool as usual, even though construction was underway everywhere, and he could see all the development prospects in progress from all sides.

Adam took his water from behind his left bag. He had been carrying a small backpack. He drank while sitting and gazing at the beautiful lake, as beautiful as ever and unchanged. Kenanga Lake, also called the lake of heaven, where Adam lived.

Are the trees gone? And what is this? Why is there construction everywhere? Naura was puzzled. She was about to enter the Kenanga Lake area, where she usually gazed at the clear lake. Now, five kilometers before the lake, there was a large sign, and the area was covered with zinc and other materials to cover the construction within.

There was only a sign that said "Spring of Heaven" project, and another sign that said, "Construction is underway." "Be careful, there's a lot of construction going on."

Naura was curious and anxious. Who had done all this? Was this beautiful land going to be demolished and turned into an industrial site? Naura felt the loss of the lake; it was the only happy memory in her life. If it were destroyed, what would happen?

Her memories and future would be lost, too. Her present was destroyed, and now the past she wanted to remember would also be destroyed. A sadness was ready to overflow from Naura's heart.

Naura now wondered what this insane person wanted to build. Would this area be transformed into factories? Or would it be a villa complex for the wealthy to vacation and enjoy their retirement?

Or would this place be turned into a large factory, like a cigarette factory or a mill for materials like clothing and other things? The more curious Naura became, the more she wanted to go in and see. Although it was closed, Naura knew a shortcut inside that would lead her to Kenanga Lake.

Yes, Adam had often taken Naura through that secret place to get there faster, through some shady palm trees and bamboo. There was a beautiful path to simply enjoy the cool, forest-like atmosphere. Naura couldn't hold herself back any longer. She followed the path Adam had shown her. One by one, Naura passed the trees. They were still as beautiful as ever, except that some of the once dense shrubs had begun to thin out, and some of the rows had been cut down.

However, it seemed the felling wasn't intended to destroy them, but to organize them. Sure enough, the shrubs now stood straight up. Previously, some were always leaning or even collapsed and left unattended. Now, although there were fewer shrubs than before and the bamboo trees were more spaced apart, none had fallen and ruined the scenery. They all stood upright and towering.

The beauty was further enhanced by the glint of sunlight filtering through the rows of bamboo. Occasionally, as we walked along the path, the rays of sunlight hit our faces, sometimes obscured by the bamboo trees.

The twinkling lights were beautiful, as if we were passing through twinkling lights, except the lights were sunlight.

Naura passed through rows of towering bamboo bushes until she reached the end. Soon, she would pass several large trees and reach the shore of Kenanga Lake. Naura hoped that when she arrived and saw Kenanga Lake, it would still be intact and beautiful. A factory building would not be built there, as it would certainly pollute the water.

Naura then reached the edge of the row of bushes. Sure enough, she nearly hit a large wall. The towering trees before reaching the lake were gone. Only a few small trees remained. Naura stopped her motorcycle.

Several workers mixing cement looked in Naura's direction. They thought it was the woman who usually delivered food, snacks, or drinks. But why did her face look different? That was what the workers thought. They simply continued with their work.

Naura was trembling; after not visiting this place for so long, it had changed so much, and it was completely different from the beauty she had always imagined.

Slowly, Naura got off her motorcycle. Her steps were a little unsteady, her memories quickly fading as she saw all the construction around the lake. Many workers were divided into teams, building on all sides. Naura continued walking, passing by, where walls were being built.

Naura continued walking, passing by curves of construction and passing several workers. It was already crowded, and indeed, in Naura's imagination, this must be the construction of a large factory. Naura continued walking, as once around her were large, towering trees.

The grass was still quite tall, and it still reminded her of the days when she walked, her hands grazing the tips of the reeds. Her hands felt cool as they touched and touched the reeds.

She used to do this because it felt like heaven and the only peace she felt. Now, she did it again, because only the reeds remained. The white flowers of the reeds at the tips of the grass brushed against her soft hands. It tickled, but also gave her the feeling of being at one with nature.

Naura's eyes closed as she slowly walked. The beauty of her imagination could be felt so clearly, as if it were all a coolness, spreading throughout her body.

The towering trees were gone. In front of her, a line of grass stretched about 50 meters toward the lake. Naura didn't want to open her eyes, afraid of encountering something that would disappoint her. She wanted it to remain as it was before, the beautiful lake she always gazed upon.

After getting married, this was the first time she visited her memories. Slowly, Naura lost the friction of the flowers and the weeds. Were the remaining weeds gone? If the weeds were gone, then ahead was a seat and a guava tree by the lake. It must have been refreshing to imagine sitting there again.

Slowly, Naura opened her eyes. About 15 meters ahead, the guava tree was still as it had always been, blowing in the wind and its dry leaves falling. There was also a long wooden chair. However, Naura's eyes were fixed on the figure sitting, facing the lake. The figure seemed so familiar to Naura, only his body looked thin.

Was that Adam? If he were Adam, why was he here? Was he also mourning the prospect of a factory being built over Kenanga Lake and enjoying his final moments admiring its beauty?

A second later, Naura was afraid to step closer to Adam. After all this time, she had been the one to hurt and destroy Adam's life. Was she worthy of even speaking to him? She hadn't even uttered a single apology since destroying his entire life.

On the one hand, her fear grew when Adam found out she was here and met him. She imagined he would be furious with her presence, perhaps even seeking revenge for what she had done in the past and betrayed his love.

They had once promised to keep their love pure, no matter what, even their legendary vows, that they wouldn't care if the earth and sky split apart. Their love would be eternal, and they would always be together.

She was the one who broke their promise, even abandoning Adam in this lake. A sacred and holy place for them, yet she was the one who broke it all. Severing the woven bonds, like someone who painstakingly makes and sews a garment until it's complete, only to suddenly break all the threads and rip them out so roughly, ruining the garment.

It's like someone who plants and cares for a tree, watering it and fertilizing it daily. But before the tree bears fruit, the person becomes impatient and pulls it up by the roots.

That's how she felt about Adam. Now, the man whose life was destroyed stood before her, silent and motionless, except as he gazed at the clear Kenanga Lake. Did she dare to greet him, even to say hello, or even to apologize for all she had done?

Leaving him and choosing happiness with another man. Why did she leave Adam? To save her family from destruction. That was the answer she could give when she was forced to do so. But did Adam want to know the reason?

And now, it was all over. Their relationship had ended for love, so was there still hope for it to become a friendship?

Right!

That was something that could heal all the wounds she had felt guilty about towards Adam. She had to be brave, she had to say sorry, and she had to be brave enough to build a friendship, at least to heal the regrets that haunted her every night.

Naura plucked up courage, saying "Basmallah" in her heart and on her lips. She slowly approached the man; his body did indeed look thinner than before. Naura approached slowly, not wanting to disturb him suddenly. It seemed Adam was enjoying the cool lake air; perhaps this was also a farewell to the lake's beauty, as industrial development was planned here.

Amidst the whirring sound of metal against metal, the pounding of workers repairing the building, and the excavators piling and digging. These sounds intertwined, accompanied by the cool breeze lingering from the clear lake.

"You just arrived, Naura? Has it been a long time?"
