Shadow World: The Ash Heritage

16. The War of the Heirs

The sky above the Ash Valley bled a deep, bruised crimson.

It wasn't the sun setting. It was the color of blood.

Hundreds of thousands of Legacy energy trails converged upon the valley, making the air vibrate as though the world itself were choking in agony. Amidst the ruins of an ancient empire buried for thousands of years, heirs from every bloodline stood locked in confrontation.

They had all traveled here for a single reason: The Ash Throne.

The ultimate legacy, long dismissed as mere myth. And Surya was the first person in history to awaken it.

Yet his success had only marked him as a public enemy in the eyes of every other heir.

Standing atop the fractured black earth, Surya wore an expression of chilling composure. His frame still bore the scars of past battles, yet the aura radiating from him forced rival heirs to instinctively retreat a step or two.

In his grip, the Ash Relic pulsed faintly, moving as though possessing a life of its own.

"So he's the heir who rejected the Ash Throne?"

A figure stepped forward from the crowd: a towering man with stark white hair and golden eyes, framed by the towering projection of a celestial dragon woven from pure light.

Kael. The Heir of the Sky Dragon. One of the most legendary names among all lineage holders.

"Fascinating," Kael murmured with a thin, mocking smile. "For thousands of years, people have slaughtered each other just to touch that power. And yet, you cast it aside."

Surya stared at him expressionlessly. "I have no use for a power that demands an exorbitant price."

A dry laugh echoed. "Eloquent words."

Kael raised a hand, and dragon-fire erupted behind him. "Yet the world isn't built by those who reject power. It is conquered by those strong enough to command it."

In an instant, crushing pressure saturated the valley.

The remaining heirs made their move. Those who had lingered on the sidelines finally revealed their fangs.

A woman draped in black robes raised her staff, and the sky choked instantly with thousands of glowing spell runes. "The Heir of the Dark Witch has not come here for a chat," she declared, her voice cold. "We are here to claim the Ash Legacy."

Across the clearing, a phalanx of knights clad in immaculate silver armor drew their blades. "The Heir of the Holy Sword will never allow such a sacred power to fall into unworthy hands."

Within a heartbeat, every fragile alliance forged before entering the Ash Valley shattered. Treaties sworn to weather the greater threat dissolved into a merciless free-for-all among mortals.

No friends. No allies. Only rival heirs desperate to crown themselves the ultimate sovereign.

The opening explosion shook the valley floor. And then... the world collapsed into hell.

A thousand distinct techniques tore the earth simultaneously. Dragon-flames scorched the firmament. Black lightning crashed down like divine judgment. Energy blades cleaved mountains in two, while archaic sorcery ground stone into fine powder.

Surya stood dead center within the storm of devastation. He did not attack. He only watched.

He understood something the other heirs were blind to. They had all rushed here believing they could harvest the Ash Legacy. But none of them comprehended what they had actually summoned.

The Ash Throne wasn't merely a reservoir of power. It was an entity. Something alive, possessing a dark, absolute will.

"Surya."

A familiar voice cut through the chaos. He turned his head.

A phantom materialized amidst the battle smoke. The Ash King. The figure whose face matched his down to the exact millimeter.

"You are still fighting your destiny," the king noted quietly.

Surya clenched his fists. "I am not you."

The Ash King offered a faint smile. "That is what makes you interesting." He swept a gaze across the carnage. "Every heir here desires to be king. Yet you are the only one trying to shatter the throne."

Surya narrowed his eyes. "Then why did you show up?"

The Ash King didn't answer.

Because at that exact second, a scream ripped through the air.

One of the heirs collapsed, their body instantly dissolving into drifting ash within a single heartbeat.

Everyone froze. A horrifying realization swept through their ranks.

Their own legacies were turning on them. The powers they had worn like armor were slowly devouring their hosts from the inside out.

"What's happening?!" shrieked one of the surviving heirs.

Another tried to sever their connection to their power, but it was far too late. Black tendrils erupted from their pores. "We were tricked..." they choked out, their voice trembling with horror. "This legacy isn't a gift... It's a curse."

Panic consumed the clearing. Yet a handful of heirs pushed forward, too intoxicated by power-lust to retreat.

Kael lunged directly at Surya. "You! You knew about this!"

A dragon-empowered fist punched forward. Surya raised a hand, and the Ash Relic manifested a dense black barrier. The shockwave of the collision hammered the valley walls.

"Tell me!" Kael roared, veins bulging at his temples. "Why can you command that legacy?!"

Surya shoved him back. "Because I never tried to possess it."

The answer stopped Kael cold.

Yet before Kael could counter, the ground beneath their feet fractured violently. A colossal fissure split the earth wide open, releasing an archaic groan that had slumbered for millennia.

"Heirs..."

"Your bickering has awakened me."

The entire valley paralyzed.

From deep within the ruins, a massive sigil surged upward—the emblem of the Ash Throne. Only this time, it wore a different hue.

It was no longer black. It bled a violent, visceral red.

The truth finally dawned upon the heirs. They hadn't come here to seize a legacy. They had walked straight into a slaughterhouse as sacrificial offerings.

Surya looked down at the Ash Relic in his hand. For the first time since he had claimed it, the artifact shuddered. Not out of martial readiness. But out of sheer, unadulterated terror.

"Relic..." Surya whispered. "What are you feeling?"

No response.

Instead, Surya’s arm moved entirely on its own. The Ash Relic hoisted upward. A tidal wave of black energy burst outward.

"Surya!" someone shouted in alarm.

Yet he had lost command of his own limbs. The artifact emitted a sound—a resonant vibration that belonged to no mortal throat.

"Thank you..."

Surya’s eyes blown wide. "What?"

"...for bringing me back to this place."

Fractures began to spiderweb across the surface of the Ash Relic. From those fissures poured a blinding, dark-red luminescence. Surya tried to rip his grip away, but the artifact clamped onto his skin with an ironclad, inescapable lock.

"All this time..." the voice whispered. "I was never your weapon."

"I was the key."

A staggering pulse of compressed energy slammed into Surya’s chest. The rival heirs stumbled backward in horror. Even the phantom Ash King looked genuinely startled.

"Impossible..." the king muttered. "The relic chose him...?"

Foreign memories flooded Surya's mind unbidden: Ancient wars. Betrayal. The collapse of an empire. And a singular, bone-chilling truth.

The Ash Relic had never been forged to aid an heir. It had been built for a single purpose: to hunt down a vessel. A living conduit capable of housing the Ash King's rebirth.

Surya gritted his teeth, anger surging hot in his chest. "So the whole time..."

"You were just using me?"

The artifact fell silent. Then, a cold voice answered:

"Yes."

For the first time, the entity that had guided and protected him cast him aside.

And amid the war of the heirs, with every enemy closing in for the kill, Surya realized a devastating truth:

His greatest enemy wasn't the rival lineages. It wasn't the Ash King. It wasn't even the desolate world striving to erase him.

It was the very thing he had clutched in his palm since day one.

The Ash Relic shattered apart. Black shadows consumed Surya's frame entirely. And from deep within that abyss, a new voice echoed:

"Awaken, final heir."

"Or die as a vessel."

The sky tore open. The war of the heirs had finally begun.

Only now... Surya possessed no weapon left to fight with.
