The Cast-Off Wife's Revenge
16. Mask of the Executioner
The atmosphere at the edge of the northern mountain ravine that night felt intensely suffocating. Thick fog swirled between towering pine trees, while the night wind blew fiercely, carrying a bone-chilling cold. At the edge of the steep precipice, Aileen's sedan was parked at an angle with its right tires dangling over empty air, ready to plunge freely into the dark abyss far below.
A few meters behind her, Rehan's black SUV sat with its doors still wide open. Its engine roared softly, letting its high-beam headlights illuminate the rear of Aileen's car.
From inside the SUV, Rehan stepped out hurriedly. His face looked ghastly pale, yet his eyes blazed wildly with blind, unadulterated fury. He walked rapidly toward Aileen's car, then roughly hammered his fists against the side window glass repeatedly.
Crash! Crash! Crash!
"Aileen! Get out of the car! Open the door!" Rehan shouted in a raspy, high-pitched voice that pierced the silence of the night. "Don't hide in there! Hand over that inheritance folder right now!"
Inside the dimly lit cabin, Aileen drew a long breath. She straightened her coat, then touched the door-locking button. Without showing a single flicker of fear on her face, she slowly pushed open the car door and stepped out onto the asphalt slick with leftover rain.
Aileen stood tall, gracefully smoothing down her collar. She looked down on her husband with contempt, as though the man before her wasn't an executioner threatening her life, but a pathetic clown putting his own stupidity on display.
Witnessing the extraordinary composure on his wife's face, Rehan shed the last remnants of his sanity. His blood boiled right up to his crown.
"You can still smile, huh?!" Rehan snapped in a voice trembling with hatred, stepping forward to grip Aileen's arm with crushing force that made the woman wince slightly. "You think holding onto those documents will save your life?! My company is ruined, my life is ruined, and it's all because of your rottenness, Aileen!"
Aileen didn't struggle in the slightest. She let her arm remain gripped, then lifted her gaze to meet Rehan's reddened, vein-bulging eyes.
"Ruined?" Aileen said in a tone remarkably calm, cold, and piercing. She flashed a crooked smile—a mocking smirk that fueled Rehan's fury even further. "Rehan... what kind of zoo is running loose inside your head? You're the one who orchestrated the embezzlement, you're the one who cheated with your cheap secretary, and you're the one digging your own grave through your own stupidity. Why on earth are you blaming someone else for your own downfall?"
"Shut your mouth!" Rehan screamed hysterically, tightening his grip on Aileen's arm until her skin turned red. "You arrogant, heartless bitch! Ever since the past, you've always looked down on me, acting like my family wasn't on the same level as your stuck-up Hartono clan!"
"We never were," Aileen countered without hesitation, staring straight into her husband's eyes. "And the greatest mistake of my life was choosing to marry a deceitful rat like you."
Hearing that crushing insult, Rehan's final boundary of patience shattered instantly. His rage reached a lethal boiling point. He no longer cared about the documents, the company, or anything else in this world except obliterating the woman before him forever.
"Then let's finish everything tonight, Aileen!" Rehan yelled like a madman, entirely stripped of reason.
With all his remaining strength, Aileen's body was dragged toward the steep edge of the ravine by Rehan. He shoved his wife toward the cliffside while his hands extended, preparing to deliver the final, fatal push to cast Aileen into eternal darkness below—matching the exact murder scenario he had executed three years prior.
"Go feel that in hell, Aileen!" Rehan growled triumphantly just moments before his hands touched her body.
Yet, right at the most suspenseful second as Rehan's hands stretched out to push Aileen toward the abyss...
WHOOSH—WEEEOOO!
The roaring wail of police sirens tearing through the silence of the night suddenly thundered loud from all directions, echoing harshly against the stone walls of the mountain cliffs.
Flashing red-and-blue emergency lights snapped on brilliantly, radiating from around the highway bend and illuminating the entire cliffside area with blinding radiance.
Rehan froze instantly. His hands hung rigid in mid-air, the veins in his neck tensing taut, and he whipped his head around in panic toward the wailing sirens that now surrounded the spot where they stood.
