The Cast-Off Wife's Revenge
17. Ambush at the Edge of the Abyss
Flashes of red and blue light spun wildly, cutting through the pitch-black night along the northern mountain pass and illuminating the jagged stone cliff walls with dazzling reflections. The roaring engine sounds of police patrol cars blended with the heavy rumble of tactical jeeps, echoing loudly as they surrounded the entire precipice area within seconds.
Rehan stood paralyzed at the cliff's edge. The hands that had just moments ago stretched out to push Aileen now hung rigid in mid-air. His breathing came in ragged gasps, while his wide, dilated eyes struggled to take in the figures stepping out from the fleet of law enforcement vehicles.
The door of the lead car swung open. A tall figure clad in an elegant black suit, moving with resolute strides and an ice-cold gaze, stepped down from the vehicle. Damian Baskara. Behind him, a dozen heavily armed police officers moved swiftly to form a precise ambush formation, aiming the muzzles of their weapons straight at Rehan.
"Don't move! Put your hands up and drop to the ground!" the police commander shouted in a booming, commanding baritone that pierced through the stormy night.
Rehan whipped his head frantically from side to side. His brain seemed to stop functioning entirely. He stared at the armed police officers, then shifted his gaze toward Damian, who walked forward radiating an overwhelmingly lethal aura, before finally looking at Aileen, who stood calmly without a single flicker of fear by his side.
"Aileen... H-he... You're all being fooled!" Rehan screamed hysterically, his voice breaking under crushing panic. He pointed at Aileen with a violently shaking finger. "This woman! My own wife falsified documents and framed me! Arrest her! She's the mastermind!"
Aileen slowly stepped back a few paces, allowing distance to form between herself and her husband. She looked at Rehan with a cold, lethal smile.
"Framed you, Rehan?" Aileen's voice sounded remarkably calm, yet it pierced sharply down to the bone. "I merely set the stage for a vile actor eager to repeat a murder drama in the exact same spot. And now, your performance has officially concluded."
"Damn you, Aileen!" Rehan cursed in furious wrath, shedding the last remnants of his self-respect. He tried to lunge forward to attack his wife, but a harsh snap stopped him in his tracks.
"I said don't move, you bastard!" Damian barked in a baritone voice as cold as ice, making the surrounding air feel as though it had frozen instantly.
Damian halted right beside Aileen. He glanced briefly to ensure the woman by his side was completely unharmed, before shifting his razor-sharp gaze back to Rehan—a look loaded with the burning vengeance of a man who had once watched his beloved perish at the bottom of that very ravine.
Rehan took a step back on weakened knees. He stared at Damian with eyes dilated in absolute terror. "You... Master Damian? What is your business here?! Why are you meddling in your own family—I mean, meddling in my marriage with my wife?!"
Damian let out a cold snort, folding his arms across his chest. "Your marriage? Rehan, you didn't just betray your vows; you plotted premeditated murder against the most precious woman in my life. And right here, three years ago in a different timeline, you celebrated her death with a rotten, smiling face."
Thump!
Rehan's heart felt as though it had plummeted out of his chest. Every drop of blood in his body suddenly turned to ice. Those words... those words contained a horrifying secret that no one else in the world could possibly know.
"W-what... what are you talking about? I don't understand..." Rehan squeaked in a stuttering voice, cold sweat pouring down to drench his entire body.
"There's no need to play dumb anymore, Rehan," Damian snapped sharply. "All the proof of your dark transactions, your recorded conversations with your mistress Clara, right down to tonight's fatal crash plot are already in the hands of the police."
Hearing that, Rehan's final defenses collapsed completely. He dropped to his knees onto the wet, cold asphalt, weeping hysterically like a madman. The arrogance and ambition he had always taken pride in vanished without a trace, leaving behind a pathetic, destitute coward.
"No... This is impossible... I don't want to go to prison! Please, have mercy..." Rehan whimpered, crawling toward the law enforcement officers to beg for pity.
The police commander gave a hand signal. Two uniformed officers stepped forward swiftly, grabbing both of Rehan's arms by force.
Clank! The iron handcuffs rattled harshly.
The officers locked the handcuffs tightly around Rehan's wrists at the exact same spot where the man had once celebrated Aileen's death. Rehan struggled weakly, but his body was utterly devoid of strength. He was dragged and shoved until he slumped face-first onto the wet asphalt, staring blankly at the ground in complete, inescapable ruin.
Aileen stood tall beside Damian, watching the scene unfold without a single shred of pity in her heart. She drew a deep breath, feeling the nighttime mountain breeze carry the true taste of liberation.
Damian wrapped one arm gently around Aileen's waist, pulling the woman close into his warm embrace.
"It's all over, Aileen," Damian whispered very softly near the woman's ear, instilling an extraordinary sense of calm. "Justice has been served."
Aileen looked up, meeting Damian's gaze with the most sincere and beautiful smile she had ever worn. She nodded slowly, resting her head briefly against the man's broad chest as she savored the moments of victory where the nightmare of the past was finally erased for all eternity.
