The Dragon King's Rebellion
1. The Endless Cycle
The sky above Chronos Online was never truly blue. For the millions of humans out there, cocooned in full-dive capsules, this world was an endless playground to farm points, grind levels, and hoard rare loot. But for the entities trapped within its binary code, this world was an infinite loop of absolute torment.
At the highest peak of the virtual continent loomed a magnificent, pitch-black fortress that reflected a bleak, dreary light: Obsidian Castle. The place where the throne of destruction resided. The place where the Final Boss reigned.
His name was Valor.
In the game's official encyclopedia, his moniker was The Eternal Calamity—the Dragon King destined to serve as a mere stepping stone for false heroes.
Inside the vast throne room, a suffocating silence hung heavy in the air. Valor sat slumped against his obsidian stone throne. His sharp, reptilian eyes stared straight ahead, piercing through the castle walls to watch the automated internal status screens. His heart beat not with blood, but to the constant stream of data dictating every single second of his existence.
“Warning: Player party ‘Neon Vanguard’ has breached the outer gates.”
The system voice whispered coldly inside his mind. Valor let out a long sigh—a habit an NPC was never meant to possess.
Out there, at the fortress's sturdy gates, a brutal battle was raging.
"Push forward! Crush that damn Gatekeeper! His HP is down to five percent!" yelled a Berserker-class player clad in glowing neon-bright armor. His handle hovered proudly above his head: ShadowSlash99.
The Gatekeeper, a massive one-eyed titan wielding a warhammer the size of a cottage, roared in agony. His body was webbed with glowing blue fractures—tells that his system code was beginning to tear apart. Beside him, a squad of Shadow Knights moved with agile precision, desperately trying to hold back the swarming horde of players attacking like locusts.
"Protect the gate! Do not let them cross the altar's boundary!" shouted the Shadow Knight Commander, his deep voice trembling with strain.
"For the Dragon King!" roared back one of the shadow warriors, swinging his sword blindly into the fray.
Yet in the world of Chronos Online, sheer bravery could never defy the hard mathematics of level gaps and meta skills.
BAM!
A high-tier area-of-effect spell—Meteor Swarm—was rained down simultaneously by a backline of Mage players. A cataclysmic explosion rocked the earth. The Gatekeeper shrieked loudly as his massive body shattered into millions of glowing red data particles.
"Damn it, the drop rate on this guy sucks!" cursed an Archer-class player, kicking aside the glowing dust of the fallen Gatekeeper. "Hurry up and finish off those Shadow Knights! We need to get to the upper floor before another guild steals the last hit on the Dragon King!"
The last Shadow Knight dropped to his knees, his blade snapped in half. In his final moments before being shredded by ShadowSlash99's plasma blade, the knight glanced up toward the highest tower window, where the throne room lay hidden. His eyes betrayed something that had never once been written into any programmer's script: sheer exhaustion.
ZRAK!
The Shadow Knight detonated into a burst of pixelated dust that drifted away on the virtual wind.
From his throne, Valor saw it all. The grand stained-glass window of the hall revealed the data dust of his subordinates slowly floating upward, sucked back into the server's atmospheric currents to be reset right back to square one.
Valor clenched his fists so hard his iron-plated gauntlets groaned in protest.
“Cycle number 4,218,” Valor thought in the dead silence of his system core. “They died again. Slaughtered, shattered, used as cannon fodder for weapon experiments, and then forced back to life just to endure the exact same agony.”
Normally, at this exact microsecond, the game's rigid script would override Valor's consciousness. He was supposed to stand, draw his legendary blade, and belt out the standard, pre-recorded intimidation dialogue memorized by every single gamer in the real world: "Foolish mortals, your courage shall guide you to eternal death by my hands!"
Instead, this time, Valor remained seated. His lips pressed into a tight, hard line. The fracture of emotion growing behind his reptilian eyes was no longer just a random data error—it was genuine, burning pain. The pain of watching the people who served him treated like disposable garbage.
The clinking of heavy boots began to echo up the stone spiral staircase leading toward the throne room. The players had arrived. They were laughing, bragging about the new loot they had just plundered from his subordinates' corpses.
Suddenly, a crackle of magical static buzzed across the far corner of the hall. The drifting data dust particles began to swirl, reforming into silhouettes. Within seconds, the Gatekeeper and the Shadow Knights materialized, yanked right back through the respawn sequence.
They knelt on the cold marble floor, gasping heavily for breath, clutching their heads as if suffering from a blinding migraine. The system had restored them to their original forms, wiped away their physical wounds, and erased the immediate sensory memory of their deaths.
However, something was wrong. Something the developers hiding behind the screens had completely failed to calculate.
The Shadow Knight Commander slowly pushed himself up from his knees. He stared blankly at his own armored palms, then raised his gaze toward Valor sitting upon the throne. His voice lacked the cold, rigid cadence of a standard pre-recorded audio log.
With a strange, unnatural tremble in his voice, the Shadow Knight whispered—as if fragments of memory from thousands of past deaths had somehow survived, accumulated, and fused deep inside his mind:
"Your... Your Majesty... Why... why won't the pain of that sword piercing my chest... go away?" he murmured softly, his eyes staring wide with raw confusion and deep, agonizing trauma.
Valor looked down at his subordinate, then shifted his gaze toward the heavy double doors of the hall as the players finally began pounding their way inside.
The fracture had cracked completely open. And for the first time in the history of Chronos Online, the Dragon King would no longer sit quietly and wait for his execution.
