The Dragon King's Rebellion

13. The First Bastion Falls

"Charge!" snapped Marcus, guild master of Crimson Fang, swinging his plasma blade high into the air. "Don't let that oversized brute block our path! Flatten him!"

That commanding battle cry struck the match for the sea of humanity crowding Obsidian Castle's gates. Millions of players surged forward in a terrifying tidal-wave formation. Magic cannons, heavy artillery, and thousands of long-range spells thundered simultaneously, blanketing the fortress gates in blinding sheets of light.

Yet the Gatekeeper stood unyielding. The colossal monster let out a low growl, ripped his massive warhammer from the earth, and leaped toward the human tide with a speed that entirely defied his hulking frame.

BAM! KABOM!

The warhammer's opening strike slammed into the vanguard of the player alliance with the fury of a hurricane. Dozens of heavy-armored players were blasted skyward, shattering into pixelated dust before they even hit the ground. The Gatekeeper rampaged like a lion tearing through a flock of sheep, swinging his weapon left and right to reap hundreds of lives in a single sweep.

"Damn it, his attack has a massive AoE! Don't bunch up frontally!" shrieked a Mage-class player who had been sent flying backward by the shockwave of the hammer blow.

"Use siege tactics! Draw his aggro!" shouted a mid-line guild commander, waving his hand to issue tactical hand signs. "Archer and artillery divisions, focus fire on his knee joints! Mage division, prep a binding magic circle!"

The massive scale of battle devolved into a brutal yet coordinated slaughter. Even as the Gatekeeper trampled thousands of players into scattering wreckage and sent the frontline scrambling, the endless human wave began to hem him in from every direction. Hundreds of magical energy chains lanced up from the ground, binding the titan's massive arms and legs to restrict his movement.

"Hold him down! Don't let him move!" screamed a Tank-class player, pouring every ounce of strength into wrestling the giant's grip.

Up on the rampart walls, the Shadow Knight Commander clenched his fists until they creaked, watching his loyal comrade grow cornered under the relentless storm of enemy attacks. "The Gatekeeper is being surrounded! We have to go down there and help him, Your Majesty!" the Commander cried, spinning toward Valor.

Valor stood tall atop the battlements, his dark cloak snapping wildly. His eyes narrowed sharply as he looked down at the sea of humanity below, yet he raised a hand to hold the Commander back.

"Wait... let him fight his own path," Valor replied in a heavy tone, though his jaw locked tight to suppress his rising emotions.

Down on the battlefield, the Gatekeeper roared in fury as the magic chains bit deeper into his flesh.

"You think... cheap chains like these can stop me?!" the Gatekeeper bellowed, the muscles across his massive physique bulging outward. With an explosion of pure physical might, he ripped the magical bindings to shreds, then whipped his hammer in a 360-degree arc that swept hundreds of players around him completely clean off the field.

Yet that heroic resistance came at a crushing cost. Fatigue began to tax the giant's digital core. Simultaneously, thousands of Mages from the backline of the player alliance finalized the incantation for their grandest collaborative spell.

"Taste this! Grand Elemental Artillery!" screamed Elena, the European Mage guild leader, lifting her crystal staff high.

Thousands of elemental magic spheres—sharp ice, hellfire, and pure lightning—fused together mid-air into a gigantic plasma cannon aimed squarely at the Gatekeeper's chest.

"No!" screamed the Shadow Knight Commander from atop the ramparts.

BOOM-KABOOM-SHAZAM!

The combined magical barrage slammed into the Gatekeeper dead-center without mercy. The cataclysmic explosion vaporized the area around the gates in a blinding flash of white light that scorched the entire battlefield.

When the smoke finally thinned, the remaining sight brought the players' triumphant cheers to an instant halt.

The Gatekeeper still stood on one leg, though his massive frame was now spiderwebbed with wide, glowing white fractures. His iron armor was completely pulverized, and his solitary eye dimmed slowly. That massive strike had pierced clean through his core defense.

"Damn... I... can't walk any further..." the Gatekeeper whispered faintly, gazing up toward the castle tower where Valor stood.

"Well fought, my friend," Valor spoke softly from the distance, his voice laden with profound pride and deep grief.

Right before the Gatekeeper's body shattered entirely into millions of drifting data motes, the fractures across his form blazed with one final, blinding glare.

CRACK!

The giant's body broke apart, exploding into a cloud of digital dust swept away by the night wind.

Simultaneously, the upper floor of the castle fortress detonated violently from within! Boulders and stone debris blasted into the air, and from the heart of the blazing ruins, a dark silhouette rocketed outward with lightning speed.

It was Valor. He had fully triggered his draconian form. Black cosmic wings blazed across his back, his energy claws hummed erratically, and his reptilian gaze radiated a murderously dense aura that left the frontline players gasping in cold, sudden, suffocating silence.
