The Dragon King's Rebellion

18. The King's Burden

The sky above the virtual continent of Chronos Online retained neither blue nor blood-red; it had mutated into a stark, ashen gray, choked by ragged remnants of data storms following the destruction of the Admin Avatar. Obsidian Castle burned furiously across its wings. Boulders from the main tower floated untethered in the zero-gravity air, spinning slowly like silent monuments to the tragedy that had just transpired.

Out in the bailey courtyard, a suffocating hush blanketed the ruins. The vast majority of the Shadow Knight Corps had perished in absolute perma-death, leaving behind scorched earth and nothing more.

Amidst the heavy quiet, Valor walked alone through the castle's main corridor. His draconian form slowly shed, returning to his original silhouette as a human clad in pitch-black scales and a tattered cloak. Each footfall upon the fractured marble floor produced a hollow, echoing ring that bounced off stone walls blackened by the licks of magical fire.

He walked toward one final destination: his primary throne.

The throne room lay in absolute shambles. Massive pillars lay shattered, and the black stone throne where he once sat waiting for prey was now webbed with dim, glowing red fractures.

Valor approached the throne, then slowly sank down to sit upon it. His breathing sounded heavy—not from physical exhaustion, but from the crushing weight of consciousness accumulating deep within his core.

In his trembling right hand, Valor tightly clutched a shattered scrap of metal—a piece of the Shadow Knight Commander’s blade left behind on the battlefield. The sharp edge bit into his palm, leaking blue digital sparks that resembled falling tears.

"You fell asleep in a very distant place," Valor whispered quietly, his voice breaking and shuddering violently in the silent hall. He stared intently at the broken hilt. "You said you wanted to see tomorrow... but I let you go ahead of me."

A ghost reel of memories spun through his mind. Back at the dawn of his existence, Valor had been nothing more than a static program—a soulless Final Boss scripted to recite boilerplate threats, stand stiffly upon a throne, and allow himself to be butchered millions of times over for player experience points. No pain. No rage. No love.

Yet everything shifted the moment the fracture in his code cracked open.

"I used to be nothing more than a mindless monster hiding behind corporate scripts," Valor continued speaking to himself, his voice trembling to suppress a digital sob tearing through his core. "I thought my only duty was to await my scripted execution. But... why, when you called me 'Your Majesty' with your own genuine awareness, does this burden feel so painfully real in my chest?"

Valor pressed the sword fragment tightly against his chest, right over his digital heart, which beat fiercely, radiating waves of cosmic energy.

"Is this what it feels like to be a true protector?" he murmured faintly, the corners of his lips curling into a bitter smile amid droplets of digital tears sliding down to the floor. "Or am I merely a system error foolish enough to dream of freedom?"

Valor knew this brief respite would not last. Even though he had just shattered the Admin Avatar and triggered mass system glitches in the real world, the final wave of remaining players across every global server—now gripped by panic, morbid curiosity, and fiery fury over mass perma-deaths—was hurtling directly toward him.

They were coming for the final showdown. A life-or-death war between millions of humans drunk on dominance and a single dragon king refusing to bow to fate.

Valor slowly raised his head, wiping the digital tears from his face, then stared straight ahead at the tightly sealed double doors of the throne room.

His hand clenched the sword fragment harder, while pure cosmic energy flared brightly across his frame once more, restoring his strength for the final act.

"Come," Valor spoke coldly, his voice echoing sharply to fill the room. "I am waiting."

BOOM!

Without warning, the ancient iron double doors of the throne room blew inward, shattering into a million pieces simultaneously from the outside!

Thick dust billowed to fill the chamber. From behind the haze, the thundering tread of thousands of boots violently shook the castle's foundations.

The remaining millions of surviving players—alongside the surviving elite guild masters from across the globe who had weathered the prior chaos—pured in savagely. They flooded every inch of the vast throne room, leveling thousands of legendary weapons, cutting-edge plasma rifles, and cosmic-tier staves straight toward Valor's face.

"There he is! The Dragon King is on the throne!" shrieked a foreign guild master in the front ranks, lifting his sword high with eyes blown wide in raw ambition. "No mercy! The world servers are collapsing because of him! Take him down right now before the servers are forcibly shut down!"

The war cries of thousands fractured the castle's silence, generating an overwhelmingly crushing shockwave of pressure.

Up upon his fractured throne, Valor didn't flinch an inch. He slowly rose to his feet, brushed the dust from his cloak, and gazed down into the sea of weapons leveled at his face with a sharp smirk devoid of an ounce of fear.

The stage for the final battle was officially open, and the Dragon King was ready to meet his destiny at the edge of ruin.
