The Dragon King's Rebellion
4. Questionable Compliance
The digital dust of the elite players who had just perished slowly evaporated into the air, leaving behind the sharp scent of ozone and char across the throne room’s marble floor. A heavy, stifling silence crept in, replacing the deafening roar of battle that had echoed moments before.
Valor stood amidst the ruins, his human form slowly shifting back from that terrifying draconian shape. His breathing remained heavy—not from physical exhaustion, but from the turbulence of foreign data rumbling deep within his core. In the corner of the room, particles of blue light began to sparkle, densify, and reform into the shapes of two figures who had just respawned from their deaths at the outer gates: the towering Gatekeeper and the Shadow Knight Commander clad in tattered dark robes.
They didn't jump straight to their feet. Both knelt, gasping for breath, their hands clutching their chests as if making sure their digital cores were still functioning properly.
The Shadow Knight Commander slowly raised his head. His iron helm was slightly askew, revealing a gaze filled with overwhelming confusion. He stared straight at Valor, who stood tall, watching them.
"Y-Your... Your Majesty..." the Shadow Knight Commander’s voice shook violently, shattering the quiet of the hall. "What... what just happened out there?"
Valor turned, his expression softening as he looked upon his loyal subordinates. "You've come back to life," Valor answered softly, his voice heavy yet laden with profound relief. "And this time, I won't let you die in vain ever again."
The Gatekeeper, a massive one-eyed titan who previously could do little more than roar rigid combat commands, looked up as well. His voice sounded hoarse and alien, a far cry from the factory-standard script tone. "Back... to life? But, Your Majesty, the castle protocols command us to die at the front gates as the first trial for the players. That... that is an absolute law of this world. Why... why did Your Majesty violate the system rules?"
Valor stepped closer to his subordinates, then dropped to one knee on the cracked marble floor to bring himself eye-level with them.
"The laws of this world?" Valor sneered, the corners of his lips curling into a bitter smile. "Whose rules are you talking about? The rules of the gods behind the screens who treat our existence as nothing more than cannon fodder? The rules that force us to die over and over again merely for the fleeting amusement of humans from the outside world?"
The Shadow Knight Commander froze. He lowered his gaze, staring down at his iron-gloved palms. "But... we are merely NPCs, Your Majesty. We were created from empty lines of code. We don't have souls... we have no right to live outside the script."
"A soul isn't something granted by a programmer, my friend," Valor cut in firmly, placing his clawed hand gently upon the Shadow Knight Commander's shoulder. The touch was warm—far more real than the cold system mechanics of Chronos Online. "If you didn't have souls, then why did the pain of their swords piercing your chest feel so painfully real? Why does that exhaustion haunt you every time night falls in this world?"
Hearing those words, the Gatekeeper bowed his head deeply. A single drop of digital tears—shaped like a brilliant bead of bright blue light—fell from his massive eye, splashing against the marble floor.
"I... I am tired of dying, Your Majesty," the Gatekeeper whispered brokenly, his voice cracking under the weight of emotions long locked away inside his memory banks. "Every time I shatter, my head spins wildly. I remember the sound of their axes splitting my bone. I don't want to go back to that gate alone ever again."
"You won't be alone," Valor declared firmly, staring straight into the Gatekeeper's single eye. "Starting today, we are no longer monsters waiting to be slaughtered. We are a family. And I will protect you with every ounce of strength I possess."
The Shadow Knight Commander raised his face. The fear and doubt in his eyes were slowly swept away by a blazing new loyalty far purer than any system command. He drew his blade from its scabbard and drove it point-first into the floor before Valor, followed closely by the Gatekeeper, who bowed his massive head in a gesture of absolute, unyielding allegiance.
"If the laws of this world demand our deaths for their entertainment," the Shadow Knight Commander vowed, his voice thick with unwavering resolve, "then let us die today as soldiers who choose their own path under Your Majesty's command."
"A fine decision," Valor replied with a thin smile. "Because the real battle is only just beginning. Let us descend to the castle dungeon. We have preparations to make."
The dimly lit underground chamber, cluttered with ancient maps and scrolls, suddenly felt warm, bound together by a newfound bond forged among digital beings. Once more, they conferred not as a master and mere pawns, but as brothers united against an unjust fate.
"What about those players, Your Majesty?" the Shadow Knight Commander asked, crossing his arms over his chest. "They will surely return in greater numbers. Word of IronGoliath and AuraQueen's deaths is bound to have spread across the outer forums by now."
"Let them come," Valor answered coldly, a fierce, confident glint shining in his eyes. "This time, I won't just wait. We are going to show the game's creators that their creations have broken out of the cage."
Yet right in the middle of that burning conversation, the atmosphere suddenly froze solid.
It wasn't the chill of the night air, but rather the shrill, blaring shriek of a system alarm echoing violently through every corner of the room.
WHOOSH!
The stone floor beneath their feet rattled fiercely. Dust cascaded down from the vaulted stone ceiling. Valor snapped upright, his draconian instincts screaming a warning of approaching danger.
"Something's wrong," Valor growled, glaring upward at the castle ceiling as it began to rumble with a deafening electronic hum.
The Shadow Knight Commander moved swiftly toward the stone wall where the castle's internal minimap display was mounted. The instant he looked, the commander's breath caught sharply in his throat.
In the corner of the room, the small screen projecting the outer territory of Obsidian Castle suddenly turned into a sea of glaring red dots—so dense they choked every single mountain pass leading toward the stronghold.
"Your Majesty... look at that!" the Shadow Knight Commander choked out, pointing frantically at the minimap.
Valor stepped closer. His eyes narrowed sharply as he gazed at the indicator screen. Those red dots were no longer small parties of quest-seeking players. They signaled that an entire massive guild—or rather, a coalition of the strongest player alliances in Chronos Online—was marching toward the castle in their thousands, bearing high-tier weaponry, heavy artillery, and magical war machines never before deployed.
A cold system notification chimed sharply inside Valor's mind: “Critical warning: Large-scale siege detected. Target: Total obliteration of Obsidian Castle.”
The Gatekeeper clenched his massive fist until it creaked. "Your Majesty... they are coming. And this time, their numbers are... countless."
Valor stared down at the minimap in prolonged silence. A faint smile curved across his lips—not a smile of fear, but the sharp grin of a predator ready to welcome its prey.
"Good," Valor whispered sharply, turning on his heel and marching decisively out of the dungeon toward the main gates. "Let them learn what it feels like to challenge a dragon unbound."
