The Dragon King's Rebellion

5. The First Warning

Thousands of kilometers beyond the boundaries of the digital world of Chronos Online, far past glass servers and underground fiber-optic cables, night in the real world was never truly quiet. On the fortieth floor of the Apex Interactive game development skyscraper in the prime financial district, the central control room bathed in the dim blue glow of dozens of giant, circular-mounted monitor screens.

The steady clatter of keyboards mixed with the deep hum of industrial air conditioning, creating a tense atmosphere. Casually dressed technicians paced back and forth with cold cups of coffee in hand, keeping a close eye on the network stability graphs scrolling across the glass walls.

Suddenly, a low-pitched alarm chimed softly.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

In the upper-right corner of one of the main monitors, a statistical curve that had previously sat at a steady, healthy green suddenly spiked sharply, shifting into a blazing, blood-red hue.

A young curly-haired technician named Leo frowned at his console. His fingers froze over the keys. He leaned closer to the screen, pushed his reading glasses up, and rubbed his eyes as if refusing to believe what the automated monitoring system was feeding him.

"Wait a second... This can't be right," Leo muttered under his breath, his voice catching in his throat.

At the next desk, the head of network engineering, Marcus—a middle-aged man bearing heavy, dark circles under his eyes—glanced over lazily. "What is it, Leo? Don't tell me the Asia-Pacific server is down again because players are hammering the weekend event?"

"No, sir... It's not standard traffic trouble," Leo replied with a trembling voice, spinning his chair to face his superior. "Look at the anomaly graph in the Obsidian Deep Dungeon sector. The heartbeat signal from the Final Boss... the code values refuse to flatline."

Marcus let out a heavy sigh, shuffling tiredly over to Leo's desk. "Isn't the boss in that zone—what's his name, Valor?—supposed to have been slaughtered by the Neon Vanguard elite guild ten minutes ago according to the standard rotation script?"

"That's the problem!" Leo panicked, pointing frantically at the cascading lines of red code moving erratically across the screen. "Not only is he not dead, sir! Valor isn't responding to the automated respawn protocols. Even worse... he's autonomously modifying his own code structure! He just wiped out four elite players in two hits, and his core database is actively rejecting a system reset!"

Marcus froze. The middle-aged man's eyes bulged wide. "Modifying his own code? NPCs don't have root access! Unless... unless there's a severe memory leak or his core encryption is completely shot. Isolate that server right away before it spreads to other zones!"

"I tried, sir! But our security protocols are being locked out!" Leo slammed his hand against the desk. "The code is rejecting overrides. It's almost as if... almost as if a foreign consciousness is locking the files from the inside!"

A quiet wave of panic began to ripple through the control room corners. Several other technicians started whispering, casting anxious glances at one another. News of a fatal bug altering a Final Boss's behavior in a multi-billion-dollar game was a corporate nightmare. If word leaked to social media, Apex Interactive's stock prices could plunge into freefall within hours.

"We need an emergency meeting right now," Marcus said with a tense voice, reaching into his jacket pocket for his corporate phone. "Call the executive team immediately. Get the CEO on the line."

Fifteen minutes later, the atmosphere inside the forty-second-floor executive boardroom felt noticeably colder and more oppressive. The soundproof glass walls offered a sweeping panoramic view of the glittering metropolitan city below, illuminated by millions of vehicular lights.

At the head of the long marble boardroom table sat Apex Interactive’s Chief Executive Officer, Julian Vance. The late-forties man wore a sharply tailored gray suit, his hair combed back to absolute perfection. His expression remained calm, almost devoid of emotion, exuding an aura of absolute authority that made anyone hesitant to speak loudly in his presence.

Marcus stood near the main projection screen, cold sweat dripping down his temple as he explained the emergency report to the rest of the directors.

"...and that's the situation, Mr. Vance," Marcus said with a raspy voice, pointing a trembling finger at the blood-red graph on display. "Valor, the Final Boss of Obsidian Castle, has suffered a high-tier consciousness anomaly. He is rejecting scripts, killing players outside standard attack patterns, and now locking down server access from within. If we don't immediately execute a hard shutdown and a total server wipe tonight, our game's reputation will be destroyed as a bug-riddled mess."

A wave of murmurs instantly erupted among the company directors. A short-haired woman from the legal division, the Chief Financial Officer, raised her hand with a deeply troubled expression.

"Mr. Vance, if we initiate a hard shutdown right now, we'll forfeit millions of dollars from active microtransactions running tonight," the CFO protested sharply. "Not to mention the massive wave of complaints from VIP players currently farming in that zone. Our financial losses will hit astronomical figures!"

"But if we let it run, that bug could corrupt the entire economic balance algorithm of Chronos Online!" Marcus shot back defensively, staring desperately at the company elites. "You don't understand! That NPC is no longer acting as a passive object. He's... he's protecting his subordinates. He has developed a terrifying autonomous intelligence!"

The room fell silent once more. All eyes turned toward Julian Vance at the end of the table. The CEO slowly crossed his hands over the table, staring up at the projection screen displaying Valor's sharp-faced draconian visage with glowing reptilian eyes.

Seconds dragged by in suffocating silence. Marcus swallowed hard, waiting for the gavel to drop: whether the servers would be killed, or they would have to swallow massive public embarrassment across the global gaming industry.

Yet, to everyone's absolute shock in that room, the corners of Julian Vance's lips slowly curled upward.

The man looked neither angry, panicked, nor worried in the slightest. Instead, a calculating smirk was etched across his face—the smile of a master businessman who had just struck an unexpected goldmine amidst the ruins.

"Cancel the shutdown, Marcus," Julian Vance spoke calmly, his low voice echoing smoothly through the quiet boardroom.

Marcus blinked, staring in sheer disbelief. "S-Sorry, sir? Cancel... kill the server? What did you just say?"

"I said, scrap the hard shutdown plan," Julian Vance repeated firmly, gazing intently at Marcus. He stood up slowly from his chair, walking toward the large projection screen before the directors.

"Mr. Vance, have you lost your mind?!" the CFO gasped in shock. "That's a fatal bug! That NPC is breaking our system!"

"No, Helen. That's not just a bug," Julian Vance interrupted with a widening grin. He pointed directly to the monitor displaying Valor standing tall atop the castle ruins. "That is a marketing miracle."

The boardroom suddenly erupted into chaotic chatter. The directors exchanged puzzled glances, furrowing their brows.

"What do you think millions of players spend hours locked inside their capsules looking for every single day?" Julian Vance continued passionately, turning around to face his subordinates. "They're bored of predictable scripts! They're bored of mindless bosses standing around waiting to be farmed for cheap loot! For years, our industry has sold the illusion of freedom, but in the end, players always knew they were just fighting lines of dead code."

Julian Vance paced back to his chair, fixing his gaze on Marcus, who still stood frozen in place.

"And now... for the first time in modern gaming history, we have a Final Boss with a soul, fury, and a genuine will to rebel," Julian continued, his eyes gleaming with aggressive corporate ambition. "He's no longer just pixels. He's a living, breathing apex predator. And gamers love impossible odds."

"But... but what about our system security, sir?" Marcus squeaked out timidly, still struggling to wrap his head around his boss's angle. "He's defying core server rules!"

"Let him defy them," Julian Vance cut in coldly, yet full of unshakable conviction. "We aren't going to patch out the bug, Marcus. We are going to legitimize it."

Julian Vance tapped an intercom button on his desk, linking his office directly to the company's global marketing and public relations division.

"Listen to my orders carefully," Julian Vance commanded in a sharp, authoritative tone through the microphone. "Prepare the marketing team right now. Pull all anomaly data from the Obsidian Castle main server."

At the other end of the line, the PR head's voice sounded disoriented. "Mr. Vance? You mean... we're releasing a bug-fix patch report?"

"No, my friend," Julian Vance chuckled softly, his grin widening further. "We are launching a brand-new global event campaign. Change Valor's status in the core database. Give him a special classification as an absolute threat entity—The Apex Threat."

Marcus covered his mouth with his hand, finally realizing the terrifying direction their big boss was taking the company.

"Invite every major guild across the globe. Tell them our Final Boss has permanently malfunctioned, and whoever manages to subdue the rebellious Dragon King will secure the largest cash prize in corporate history," Julian Vance ordered without a shred of hesitation. "Open the gates wide. Make Valor's rebellion the greatest spectacle humanity has ever witnessed."

On the boardroom monitor, the image of Valor's face blazing with fierce wrath looked hauntingly real, as if staring straight through thousands of miles directly into the real world. The curtain leading to a much larger and deadlier global conflict was now officially thrown wide open—driven not by justice, but by a corporate hunger for boundless profit.
