The Dragon King's Rebellion
6. The First Intruders
The discussion forums of Chronos Online suddenly flatlined under a wave of unnatural, hyper-surging traffic. Sparked by an anonymously uploaded ten-second video clip, rumors regarding the Final Boss's anomalous behavior spread like a plague through the dead of night. In the footage, Valor was seen speaking entirely off-script and utterly obliterating a high-tier party without relying on any standard attack patterns. To casual gamers, it looked like a simple visual glitch. But to top-tier guilds, that rumor smelled like raw blood calling out to sharks.
They didn't see a bug. They saw a secret hidden quest worth trillions of experience points and exclusive legendary loot the developers had never intended to unlock.
Beneath the canopy of Obsidian Castle’s synthetic night sky, four shadows darted swiftly through the outer corridor, weaving past massive pitch-black stone pillars. They were the core members of the elite guild Phantom Edge—a professional infiltration squad infamous for executing missions in total silence.
"Slow your pace," whispered Rex, the Assassin-class guild leader, through the party's private communications channel. His eyes flickered sharply behind a high-tech iron visor, scanning every corner of the marble floor with heat sensors. "The corporate announcement this morning about the Apex Threat isn't bluffing. This castle's security systems have undergone a wild overhaul. Don't be reckless."
Behind him, a Mage-class woman named Lyra let out a light snort, her fingers twirling a crystal staff that cast a dim blue glow. "Oh, come on, Rex. You're being way too paranoid. No matter how much they tweak their programming code, deep down they're still just dumb NPCs. They move based on logic scripts, and logic can always be cracked with mathematics."
"Don't underestimate them, Lyra," interjected Kael, a heavily armored Tank lugging a hundred-kilogram tower shield. His heavy boots were muffled by a sound-dampening spell. "We're talking about a boss that just flattened the Neon Vanguard guild without a shred of mercy. If his script is genuinely broken, the server might as well be treating him like a living entity."
"All the better," chimed in Zane, the Archer-class player bringing up the rear with a modern composite bow slung across his back. "The harder the challenge, the higher the auction price for the loot we drop tomorrow morning. Make sure you guys are recording every second for the stream."
The four elite intruders moved with elite, military-grade precision. They hurdled toxic floor traps and skirted past magical arrow-launchers with split-second timing. Their extensive field experience allowed them to read the rhythm of a Chronos Online dungeon like the back of their own hands.
Yet that tactical serenity shattered the instant they stepped across the threshold of the inner hall's main gates.
Krr-ghhh!
The grating sound of massive stone grinding against stone broke the night's silence. The hallway ahead of them was suddenly choked by a towering shadow.
"Hold!" Rex barked, raising his left hand to signal his party straight into a defensive stance.
Out from the gloom of the corridor, a massive, one-eyed titan strode forward with unyielding momentum: the Gatekeeper. In the past, this monster had always remained anchored to a single static spot, swinging its colossal club blindly at anyone foolish enough to wander into its attack radius—a pattern easily exploited by any veteran player.
But tonight, the Gatekeeper wasn't standing alone. To his left and right, a squad of Shadow Knights materialized simultaneously, snapping into a tight, highly disciplined military formation. They didn't charge blindly. Instead, they locked their dark shields together, forging an impenetrable wall across the narrow corridor.
Lyra blinked in absolute disbelief, slowly lowering her staff. "Wait... what the hell is that? Since when does a castle gatekeeper run a tactical fortress formation?! That's a heavy infantry Phalanx!"
"He's not attacking us on sight..." Kael muttered, his heavy armor groaning under tension as he hoisted his tower shield. "He's... he's reading our positioning."
True to the Tank's words, the Gatekeeper stared down the Phantom Edge party with his glowing, solitary eye, radiating a cold, calculating awareness.
"Intruders detected in sector four," the Gatekeeper’s voice rumbled down the corridor—deep, heavy, and completely devoid of the looped automated dialogue players had grown accustomed to hearing. "Lockdown formation. Do not let a single one of them step foot closer to His Majesty's throne room."
Rex’s eyes blown wide in sheer shock. "He... he's talking?! Without a quest trigger dialog?!"
"To hell with the dialogue!" Zane panicked, immediately nocking an arrow and letting loose a rapid-fire volley of glowing plasma arrows straight toward the Gatekeeper. "Blast them before they call for backup!"
Zing! Zing! Zing!
The high-velocity plasma arrows streaked forward, targeting the vulnerable joints between the Gatekeeper's armor plates. In the past, this opening would have registered as a clean, devastating critical hit.
Yet unexpectedly, a Shadow Knight vaulted forward with blinding speed, sacrificing his own shield to intercept the entire barrage while the remaining shadow warriors instantly shifted to seal the defensive gap with flawless coordination.
"Damn it, their defense is solid!" Zane cursed, frantically drawing his bowstring back again.
"Don't waste energy on a frontal assault!" Rex commanded sharply, his eyes darting around for an opening. "Lyra, drop an area-of-effect Blizzard to lock down their movement in this bottleneck! Kael, get ready to breach the left flank!"
"Got it!" Lyra snapped. She raised her staff, chanting a high-tier ice incantation in a matter of heartbeat seconds. The ambient temperature in the corridor plummeted drastically, and giant crystalline icicles began to rumble to life above the Shadow Knights' heads. "Eat this—Glacial Prison!"
A magical snowstorm erupted, blanketing the corridor in thick fog and a heavy sheet of ice. All four members of Phantom Edge smiled triumphantly, assuming the enemy formation had been crippled.
That smile froze dead on their lips.
Out from the howling heart of the ice storm, the Gatekeeper hadn't frozen at all. The massive titan swung his colossal warhammer with raw, unmitigated force straight down toward the floor where Lyra stood.
"Lyra, above you!" Kael screamed.
BAM!
The hammer blow shattered the marble flooring into smithereens, generating a concussive shockwave that blasted Lyra directly into the stone wall, instantly tanking her HP bar straight down into the critical red zone.
"Argh!" Lyra shrieked in agony, collapsing to her knees with ragged breaths. "My... my magic was completely ignored by their resistance!"
"They aren't normal NPCs with static attributes anymore!" Rex shouted, his voice laced with genuine terror as cold sweat broke across his forehead. "They're adapting to our spells! Fall back! We need to get out of here right now!"
"Agreed! The back corridor is our only way out!" Zane yelled, spinning on his heel and sprinting flat-out toward the gate they had just used to enter.
Yet he had barely taken two steps when his momentum ground to a sudden halt. The air hovering right before the exit door had frozen into a suffocating, dead silence.
The marble floor beneath their boots began to rattle violently. Glowing red fractures crawled across the castle walls, emitting a low-frequency electronic hum that felt loud enough to rupture eardrums. Every single magical torch in the hallway dimmed in unison, as if cowering before the approach of something far greater.
Rex, Kael, Lyra, and Zane all snapped their heads toward the inner depth of the throne room corridor at the exact same time.
There, shrouded in thick darkness, a pair of golden reptilian eyes burned with fierce intensity.
The figure stepped forward slowly. His dark cloak trailed across the trembling floor. His appearance was the ultimate synthesis of royal majesty and ancient draconian terror—a humanoid dragon clad in pitch-black scales with cosmic energy claws crackling wildly at his sides.
It was Valor. The Final Boss, who had now transformed into a waking nightmare for every player in Chronos Online.
Valor uttered not a single word. He simply stared down the Phantom Edge party with an icy gaze, reeking of pure, unadulterated hatred that pierced straight through to their data cores.
With a casual flick of his hand, a volatile violet-black cosmic energy barrier suddenly materialized across the back doorway, firmly sealing off the elite intruders' only remaining path of escape.
Zane instinctively loosed an arrow toward the barrier, but the projectile disintegrated into dust the moment it touched the field, leaving not even a scratch.
"The exit... is locked," Zane whispered with a trembling voice, his bow sliding from his limp fingers to the floor.
Rex swallowed hard, gripping his dagger tightly while his entire body shook violently under the weight of absolute, crushing death aura. Before the Dragon King, they were no longer veteran hunters seeking glory, but mere prey trapped inside the cage of the master of darkness.
