The Hidden Artery

59. Dawn Over the Ruins

Kr-r-ack... bzzzt!

The groaning shriek of concrete and snapping steel from Aethel Corp's primary tower framework roared violently, echoing across the silent heights of the uppermost dome. Due to severe energy overload from the reactor's emergency current reversal, the giant skyscraper's foundations gave way slowly, churning up massive billows of dense dust that plumed high into the air.

Zulfa lay sprawled and exhausted on the main platform's steel plating deck, his breathing ragged and his entire body aching with deep bruises. He tried to crawl to his feet, but his strength had been entirely sapped following the deadly wrestling match and the cosmic current reversal.

Suddenly, from the direction of the emergency stairway below, a familiar shadow sprinted fiercely through the thick smoke.

"Zulfa!" cried a well-known female voice, calling his name in sheer panic.

Naya appeared, heaving for breath, her jacket caked in dust and soot stains. The girl threw herself down beside Zulfa, wrapping her arms tightly around the youth's body and helping him right his posture.

"Naya... you... you made it out of the lower console room?" Zulfa rasped, smiling weakly as he looked into Naya's anxious face.

"The emergency door unlocked the second the reactor powered down entirely!" Naya answered, tears spilling down her cheeks as she pulled Zulfa into an even tighter embrace. "God, Zul... I was so terrified you wouldn't make it..."

Behind Naya, Captain Danu hurried up alongside the remaining resistance fighters, breathing heavily. Danu immediately gripped Zulfa's arm, helping Naya steady the youth to his feet.

"Good job, kid! We did it!" Captain Danu cheered, a wide smile of profound relief breaking across his dust-stained face. "But we don't have time to catch our breath! This entire tower structure is coming down in seconds! Move, we've got to get out of here right now!"

Wasting not a single second, the small group half-carried Zulfa down the emergency stairs at a dead sprint, blasting out of the main control room ruins into the building's exterior plaza just as the entire skyscraper dome collapsed inward upon its own foundation.

BARRRR-GH!

Aethel Corp's main tower crashed flat to the earth, kicking up a colossal cloud of debris that blanketed the entire central commercial district.

Several hours later, dawn broke over the city skyline.

The dark, oppressive night sky choked with artificial purple glows gradually gave way to a warm golden-orange hue. Morning sunlight pierced the cloud cover, illuminating city streets now thoroughly liberated from the grip of a dystopian illusion.

Across every corner of the city, millions of residents previously ensnared by Aethel Corp's hallucination control systems snapped out of their daze. In the central plaza, citizens embraced, wept tears of joy, and stared up at the morning sky in wonder and freedom. The illegal energy harvesting network had been smashed to smithereens, stamping out the threat of the Total Purge forever.

Amid the corporate ruins now transformed into an open-air evacuation zone, a wave of emotional quiet enveloped the resistance squad.

Naya knelt beside Zulfa as he rested atop a clean boulder. The girl gazed intently into Zulfa's face, reaching out to brush away the remaining dust clinging to his cheek.

"We really did it, Zul..." Naya whispered with a voice trembling with emotion, a wide smile blooming across her tired face. "The city's safe. The corporate conspiracy is shattered, and everyone's finally free."

Zulfa looked at Naya, returning the sincere smile. He drew Naya into a warm embrace, letting the girl rest her head against his shoulder beneath the bright morning dawn.

"Yes, Naya," Zulfa answered softly, tightening his arms around her. "We won. And just like I promised... nothing's going to keep us from a peaceful tomorrow anymore."

Captain Danu, standing nearby while casually smoking a cigarette beside several Arkian warriors, chuckled softly at the sight. He shook his head slowly, feeling every ounce of last night's sacrifice had been paid in full.

Yet amid the peaceful atmosphere and tears of relief blanketing the new dawn over the corporate ruins, a sudden anomaly occurred.

Among the scattered iron debris and shredded tower circuitry, Naya's emergency signal scanner lying atop a stone spontaneously flickered to life, flashing a rapid green light.

Beep... beep... beep...

Naya furrowed her brow, breaking her embrace with Zulfa for a second to bend down and retrieve the device. "Huh? Why is this activating on its own? I thought all corporate satellite networks were completely paralyzed?"

Zulfa turned, gazing at the device screen in Naya's hand with a wary glare.

Across the compact screen, instead of displaying dead data, rolled a string of rapidly shifting random passcodes, followed by a mysterious transmission signal from an uncatalogued outer-space satellite beaming a fresh encrypted message straight to the surface of the earth.

Zulfa rose slowly to his feet, stepping toward the debris pile while locking his gaze onto the clear morning sky.

Beneath that peaceful dawn, the digital hissed whispers of the foreign satellite seemed to hint at a terrifying truth: the destruction of Aethel Corp was not the end of everything, but merely the opening of a doorway to something far larger and more dangerous lurking out in the black void of space.
