The Hidden Artery
61. The Splintered Sky
The high-frequency shriek of the emergency signal scanner pierced the morning quiet of the makeshift resistance hideout. Naya gasped, dropping her plastic coffee cup onto the battered wooden desk. The warm brown liquid spilled, soaking across the stack of urban layout maps they had just unrolled.
"Zul! Look at this, fast!" Naya cried in panic, pointing toward the main monitor screen tracking the alien satellite wave data. "The frequency of that outer-space transmission just spiked three hundred percent in under a minute! There's a massive anomaly ripping through our atmosphere!"
Zulfa, who had been tuning an Aether-Tech rifle barrel in the corner of the room, dropped his soldering iron and bolted to the console table. His eyes blew wide as he watched the data shifting wildly across the screen. Before he could utter a word, a violent tremor suddenly rumbled from outside the hideout's windows.
Kr-r-ack... BOOM!
"What's going on outside?!" barked Captain Danu, striding into the room in a hurry while hauling an assault rifle, his brow slicked with cold sweat. "Every motion sensor on the outer perimeter just went dark simultaneously!"
"Quick, look out the large window!" Naya screamed with a trembling voice, gesturing toward the glass pane facing the city skyline.
Zulfa and Captain Danu whipped around. The scene outside froze their blood in their veins.
The bright blue sky that had welcomed the city's new dawn had mutated into a deep, pitch-black purple, churning slowly to form a colossal cosmic storm eye. The thin boundary line between the real world and another dimension was collapsing on a massive scale. Across several patches of the sky, geometric fractures of bright blue light gaped in mid-air, exposing the silhouetted vistas of a strange world beyond the torn veil.
"Good God..." Captain Danu whispered in stunned horror, lowering his rifle slowly. "The sky... our city's sky has literally split open."
"That's not just a standard atmospheric storm, Captain," Zulfa said in a heavy voice, his fingers dancing fast across the console keyboard to analyze the incoming wave particle structures. "That alien satellite signal acted as the trigger. Dimensional boundaries across every corner of the city are collapsing simultaneously. This city is now on the brink of total chaos."
True to his words. Before they could digest the horrifying sky above, emergency sirens wailed in a chorus from the streets below. The hysterical screams of thousands of city residents tore through the air.
Zulfa, Naya, and Danu rushed to the hideout's balcony to survey the street below.
The scene in the commercial district resembled a scene straight out of an apocalypse movie. Private cars stalled dead in the middle of the road, while drivers and pedestrians scrambled frantically for cover. Amid the rising street dust, first-wave dimensional creatures—transparent shadow entities bearing razor-sharp crystal claws and glowing purple eyes—began crawling out of pavement cracks and storm drains, silently striking down anyone in their path.
"Those creatures... they've broken into the real world!" Naya panicked, gripping Zulfa's jacket sleeve tight. "If their numbers keep growing like this, every citizen in the commercial district will be slaughtered in a matter of hours!"
"We need to get down there and help evacuate the civilians!" Captain Danu reacted instantly, raising his rifle and moving toward the exit.
"Wait, Captain! Don't be reckless!" Zulfa intercepted, catching Danu's shoulder swiftly. He pointed toward a main street corner across the building block. "Look over there. The government and military have stepped in, but they're not here to save anyone."
From down the block, the heavy roar of armored tactical vehicles and dozens of military trucks rumbled into the district sector. Fully geared platoons swarmed out in crisp combat formation, deploying energy shields and heavy plasma weaponry.
Yet instead of firing upon the rampaging dimensional beasts, the military units strung up high-voltage barbed wire barricades and dropped massive concrete walls across every major intersection, carving the entire city into sealed zones.
"They're not evacuating civilians..." Naya murmured, her eyes wide with disbelief. "They're quarantining the entire district!"
"Not just quarantining," Zulfa replied coldly, locking his gaze on the military command truck idling in the street. "They're slicing this city into military quarantine zones for the healthy, while leaving the rest to become supernatural anomaly sectors where those dimensional beasts run wild."
Silence fell over the resistance hideout, dense and suffocating. Amid the mounting tension, the emergency television set in the corner—previously reduced to static white noise—flashed to life automatically, displaying the city leadership's official seal.
A high-ranking military officer with glittering service medals on his chest appeared on screen, reading an official announcement in a chillingly cold, authoritarian tone. The officer's face looked pale, yet betrayed absolute obedience to a central command.
"Attention all city citizens. Due to the national emergency stemming from uncontrollable dimensional anomalies, the city government officially declares Total Martial Law across all district territories," the officer stated on the television screen in a flat, emotionless drone.
Naya held her breath, pressing close to Zulfa's side as she braced for the officer's next words.
"As of this second, all civil control, utility operations, and territorial security are stripped from local governance and handed over entirely to the secret directorate representatives of The Foundation Council as the sole authority holding emergency command."

The live broadcast cut out abruptly, replaced by a screen of white static lines.
Zulfa clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned stark white. His jaw locked against a roaring inferno of fury in his chest. The Aethel Corp darkness they had shattered at the end of the previous arc was apparently nothing at all; the giant syndicate was now leveraging the dimensional chaos of their own creation to seize absolute open power over the entire city.
"Damn it..." Captain Danu hissed in rage, spitting onto the floor. "They're using mass panic to legitimize corporate dictatorship. This city has truly fallen into the hands of those monsters in suits."
Zulfa drew a deep breath, steadying the raging anger in his chest, then fixed a resolute gaze back and forth between Naya and Captain Danu.
"They can take the military, and they can carve up this city however they like," Zulfa spoke in a calm voice laced with a lethal threat. "But the game has only just begun. If they want to turn this city into a war zone... we'll show them how to fight back from the shadows."
