The Hidden Artery
81. Signals from the Edge of the Galaxy
Faint blue light reflected softly across the surface of the digital console table in the resistance's new headquarters analysis room. The air inside felt deeply calm, contrasting sharply with the tension etched clearly across Zulfa and Naya's faces. Before them, a three-dimensional holographic projector mapped the rotating coordinates of an alien galaxy—the recorded projection of the ancient anomaly crystal that had pulsed in the city park days prior.
Naya crossed her arms over her chest, narrowing her eyes sharply at the string of binary data and spectral graphs streaming down the side of the display.
"Zul, look at this frequency wave shift pattern," Naya said gravely, pointing toward the red blip blinking rhythmically at the edge of the farthest galaxy on the projector. "This isn't some random residual transmission from The Foundation Council's artificial satellites or wave reflections from the shattered tower altar anymore. The encryption pattern is pristine, highly structured, and utilizes the exact same ancient quantum geometry mathematics found in the Arkian records."
Zulfa stood beside Naya, resting his left hand on the edge of the table while slowly maneuvering his right arm—still bound in a sling—to zoom in on the star map's visual resolution. He studied each line of code meticulously, leveraging his civil engineering and system architecture expertise.
"You're right, Naya," Zulfa said in a heavy voice. "If we dissect its frequency structure, this transmission isn't trying to attack or corrupt our earth's systems. This signal is a... a reply transmission. And if my hypothesis holds true based on the geometric carvings in the underground temple long ago, the sender out at the edge of the galaxy is none other than the legendary entity we've been discussing: The First Architect."
Naya gasped softly, dropping her arms from her chest. She turned to stare at Zulfa with a furrowed brow. "The First Architect? You mean, the ancient cosmic civilization that engineered the foundational Ley-Lines of earth thousands of years ago actually exists out there, and they just listened to our gate-closure signal yesterday?"
"Not just listened," Zulfa countered, tapping several console keys to pull up an energy comparative graph. "When we sealed the main dimensional gate and brought down the corporate tower, we accidentally triggered a global resonance 'bell.' That signal rippled through earth's vein network, echoed out into space, and now they're transmitting a confirmation signal back."
"Good grief..." Naya exhaled a long breath, rubbing her temples as a sudden headache struck. "I thought once the corporate syndicate shattered, we could breathe easy and enjoy the new dawn of this asymmetric city. Turns out our earth just knocked on the wrong cosmic door!"
Zulfa offered a thin smile, glancing at Naya with a warm, tension-breaking gaze. "Hey, at least this time we aren't being hunted by cold-blooded mercenaries or mutants, Madam Assistant. This is about science, civilization, and the mysteries of the cosmos."
"Science that nearly ripped my right arm off last week, you mean?" Naya snapped fiercely, though accompanied by a small smile curving her lips. She sighed softly, returning her gaze to the holographic display. "So, what's our next scientific analytical move, Engineer Arditama? We can't just let that alien galactic signal keep bouncing off earth's atmosphere without knowing its purpose."
Zulfa straightened, his expression hardening back into professional gravity. He stepped toward the city's underground topographical map resting at the side of the table.
"We have to go straight down to the source," Zulfa stated firmly. "This galactic transmission isn't entering via man-made satellites overhead. Those waves are seeping through the Ley-Lines—the ancient energy veins embedded deep within earth's deepest foundations beneath this city. Their reflection characteristics prove the earth's core vein is reacting to the signal."
Naya fell silent for a beat, staring at Zulfa with skeptical eyes. "Descend into earth's Ley-Lines? You mean into the depths of the earth's crust where anomaly energy pressure and magma heat sit at their most extreme?"
"It's the only place we can read the raw data of that transmission in its entirety," Zulfa answered resolutely. "We have to find out whether that reply signal intends peace, or if it's triggering a brand-new instability in earth's geological structures."
Before Naya could voice her counter-argument regarding the severe risks of subterranean exploration, the atmosphere inside the new base's analysis room warped drastically.
Bzzzt... click!
Every light fixture in the room flickered wildly, shifting from bright white to a warning crimson. A deafening, low-frequency hum shrieked from deep within the concrete floor walls, followed by a subtle tremor beginning to crawl up the console table legs.
Naya lost her balance momentarily, clutching the desk edge to steady herself. "Zul! What's that?! Is there an explosion in the commercial district again?!"
Zulfa didn't answer instantly. He snatched up a portable seismic scanner from the desk, reading the vibration wave graph spiking sharply on a vertical axis. The youth's face drained white in an instant.
"It's not a surface explosion, Naya!" Zulfa shouted with a tense voice, staring at the seismic scanner display showing a bloody red line blasting past maximum threshold. "Our subterranean sensors are picking up a massive tectonic tremor centered right beneath the city's deepest foundations!"
Kr-r-ack... BOOM!
A secondary, far more violent tremor rocked the entire base building. Archive racks shifted noisily, and several coffee mugs on the desk corner tumbled off to shatter against the ceramic tiles.
Naya stared at Zulfa with wide eyes of terror, clutching his jacket sleeve tight amid the escalating local earthquake. "Zul! What on earth is happening down there?!"
Zulfa locked his eyes on the underground scanner monitor displaying a visual of earth's crust geological structure. Thousands of meters beneath the city, the blue Ley-Line veins—previously calm—now glowed wildly and began fracturing on their own, releasing a surge of cosmic energy pushing upward toward the surface.
"That signal resonance from the edge of the galaxy..." Zulfa murmured with a bated breath, realizing the horrifying consequence of what they had just analyzed. "...has triggered a chain reaction. The Ley-Line core veins beneath our city are fracturing on their own!"
