The Hidden Artery
99. Promises Beneath a New Sky
The late afternoon sun dipped low toward the western horizon, washing the city sky in a streak of golden amber fused with soft pastel violet. Beneath this new sky, cleared and pristine of any electromagnetic storm clouds, the asymmetric cityscape radiated its true, breathtaking charm. Modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers now stood in harmonious embrace around the ancient Ley-Line crystal monuments casting sapphire-blue glows across street corners and parks.
A cool evening breeze swept gently, fluttering a few stray autumn leaves across sidewalks framed by classic park lamps.
Zulfa and Naya walked side by side along a winding footpath through the sprawling central city park. The atmosphere around them was deeply tranquil. Small children chased balloons across the emerald grass, while couples lounged on park benches, listening to street melodies drifting from afar. Life had fully returned to the city, pulsing stronger and more vibrantly than ever before.
"Look around us, Zul," Naya murmured softly, breaking the comfortable silence between them. She swept her gaze across the park, then turned to look at Zulfa with a breathtaking smile. "Did you ever imagine we could walk this casually in an open park without glancing up at building ledges for enemy drones or dodging mercenary patrols?"
Zulfa chuckled warmly, slipping both hands into the casual pockets of his unzipped tactical jacket. "Last time I tried a casual walk in this park a few months ago, I had to hurl myself into a drainage culvert and crawl through it for three hours to shake Vian Pratama's goons."
Naya snorted with amusement, swatting the youth's arm lightly. "Oh, I remember that day vividly! You arrived at Captain Danu's underground hideout reeking of mud and covered from head to toe in dirty grease stains. Quite the far cry from a polished young executive or special department head."
"Hey, that messy look is pure field-operative dedication, Madam Assistant," Zulfa retorted playfully, raising an eyebrow. "Besides, when you think about it, our long journey is utterly absurd, isn't it? A civil engineer branded a traitor for defending honest structural designs, and a research assistant with a penchant for military server hacking."
"Plus an irascible, golden-hearted military veteran like Captain Danu," Naya added, laughing softly in agreement. "A wildly bizarre and chaotic combination for a world-saving team."
Zulfa smiled, halting his stride for a beat. His eyes locked onto a grand fountain at the park's center, where a medium-sized ancient anomaly crystal pierced the concrete basin floor, casting a blue luminescence mingled with splashing water.
"Chaotic, maybe. But we managed to forge it into something unbreakable," Zulfa muttered, his tone shifting into something deeper and more reflective. "From hiding in sewers, hacking the corporation's highest tower, to diving into the earth's core belly to seal the world's veins, and now... holding the keys to diplomatic relations with an alien galactic civilization."
Naya stopped walking as well. She shifted slightly, planting herself right before Zulfa. The girl stared intently into the youth's eyes, tracing the features of a face that now carried a deeper maturity, a quiet calm, and an extraordinary authority forged through all the suffering he had endured.
"You know, Zul," Naya said, her voice softening, shifting the mood from casual banter to raw vulnerability. "When you spliced that conductor cable into your right arm down in that ancient cave... when I watched your heartbeat monitor flatline..."
Naya's voice trembled slightly, and she cast her gaze downward for a second to hide the sudden well of tears pooling in her eyes. "At that moment, my world shattered right along with it. I didn't care anymore whether earth survived a galactic storm or not. All that echoed in my head was terror... a blinding, consuming terror that I was going to lose you forever."
Zulfa felt a warm pang in his chest hearing the honest, fragile confession from the girl who always stood fierce and brilliant by his side. He pulled his hands from his jacket pockets and stepped closer.
With infinite gentleness, Zulfa raised his right hand—the limb once shattered yet miraculously healed through the ancient ancestor's grace—and cupped Naya's cheek, gently brushing away the stray teardrop at the corner of her eye.
"I'm sorry, Naya," Zulfa whispered sincerely, his voice heavy with profound regret for putting her through such agony. "I'm sorry for burdening you with a fear that heavy. But you need to know one thing..."
Naya looked up, meeting Zulfa's eyes, which shone with absolute honesty.
"...the primary reason I refused the First Architect's offer of eternity in that transcendental dimension, the reason I chose to rise from the dead and force my heart to beat for a third time—it was all because of you," Zulfa continued, every word flowing straight from the deepest chambers of his heart. "I couldn't fathom living in this world, or any galaxy out there, if I couldn't see my nagging assistant's smile ever again."
Naya's cheeks flushed bright crimson. She let out a choked sniffle through a tearful laugh, then reached up with both hands to clasp Zulfa's right hand resting against her cheek.
"You always know how to string together the sweetest words, Engineer Arditama. Looks like your logic processing unit finally upgraded into a master flirting module," Naya teased with a raspy voice, though her lips curved into a radiant, unguarded smile of pure happiness.
"That's not flirting. That's the most mathematically accurate calculation I've ever made in my life," Zulfa shot back smoothly with a broad grin.
The two of them fell silent for a beat, locking eyes in a stillness far more eloquent than a thousand words. All around them, park lamps flickered to life automatically as twilight deepened, blending beautifully with the blue glow of the Ley-Line crystals.
"Starting tomorrow, our lives are going to get vastly busier than before," Naya murmured softly, rubbing her thumb across the back of Zulfa's hand. "As Head of the Boundary Monitoring Department, you'll be juggling cosmic diplomacy, redesigning city defense grids, and studying the Architect's language. Your time's going to be swallowed up by console desks and field inspections."
Zulfa nodded slowly, conceding the point. "That's true. Building a foundation for a future bridging earth and galactic civilizations isn't a small project. But before I kick all of that off..."
Zulfa stared at Naya with a gaze that abruptly turned intensely serious and resolute. He pulled his right hand from her cheek, only to capture both of her palms and clasp them tight within his own, drawing Naya a step closer.
"...there's one primary foundation project I need to wrap up first," Zulfa stated firmly.
"What project is that?" Naya asked, her heart hammering against her ribs as she stared into eyes that held her captive.
"Our future project," Zulfa answered, his voice firm yet melting with tenderness. "I don't care how complicated intergalactic diplomacy gets, or how many dimensional anomalies we have to patch up. As long as you promise to keep walking beside me, Naya... as long as we forge ahead together. Because to me, the strongest foundation in the entire universe isn't built from modern concrete, titanium steel, or even Arkian primeval magic. My strongest foundation is you."
Naya's eyes shimmered once more, this time not from dread, but from a tidal wave of overflowing joy flooding her chest. She had never imagined that the rigid engineer she once helped hack servers could utter a promise this sincere and breathtaking beneath the twilight sky.
Naya smiled radiantly, nodding her head without hesitation. "I promise, Zul. Wherever your future blueprints point—whether it's the depths of the earth, the heart of the city, or the edge of the galaxy—you'll always find this assistant of yours standing right beside you. We'll build that future together."
Zulfa exhaled a long breath laden with bottomless gratitude. He squeezed Naya's hands tighter, interlacing their fingers in the peaceful evening air.
Night slowly enshrouded the city, spilling out a blanket of twinkling stars that seemed to wave hello from distant galaxies. Beneath the new sky of an asymmetric city, two heroes who had rewoven the boundaries of the world exchanged a deeply meaningful smile.
An eternal promise had been sworn, binding their hearts tighter than any gravitational pull. And as Zulfa gripped Naya's hand in his, he knew—and promised himself—that their adventure had only just stepped into its most magnificent chapter.
