The Professor's Late Class
14. Dawn at the Campus Gates
Warm golden rays of sunlight slowly crept through the shattered windowpanes of Classroom 3B. The floating chalk dust in the air shimmered as it was bathed in the morning glow. The suffocating darkness and the horrific red glare of the neon lights had dissolved completely, swept away by the arrival of a peaceful morning.
"The sun..." Vanya whispered softly. Her trembling fingers slowly reached out to touch a beam of light resting on her wooden desk. A very real warmth began to spread across her skin. "Reno... are we really safe? This isn't another nightmare, is it?"
Reno exhaled a long, heavy breath—a sigh that released every ounce of the crushing weight that had sat on his chest all night long. He looked at Vanya with a tired smile, then took her hand in a firm squeeze.
"Yeah, Vanya. We made it. The nightmare is over," Reno answered, his voice raspy yet overflowing with relief.
Beside them, Dinda slowly rose from her kneeling position on the floor. Her face, usually covered in expensive makeup, now appeared bare, swollen from crying, and streaked with dust. Yet her eyes no longer radiated terror. A newfound tranquility rested there. She turned to Gani, who was still kneeling beside her.
"Gani... get up," Dinda called gently, tapping the heavily built young man on the shoulder.
Gani roughly wiped the remaining tears from his cheeks. He stood up slowly, feeling his joints stiffen after a full night of psychological strain. Gani looked around the classroom, which now appeared completely mundane—just an old, messy lecture room. There were no ghosts, no self-writing chalk.
"I... I've never felt this happy to see the morning sun," Gani murmured, his voice trembling with emotion. He stared at Reno, and without a word of warning, pulled Reno into a tight embrace. "Reno... I'm so sorry for everything. I was such an idiot."
Reno froze for a second in surprise, but quickly patted Gani on the back. "Forget it, Gani. What matters is that we all realized our mistakes, and we've been given a second chance at life."
Arin and Sela joined them. Sela looked considerably calmer now; the dark shadows and supernatural whispers that had shattered her nerves had vanished alongside the peaceful departure of Professor Danu's spirit. The six of them gathered in the center of the room, embracing one another while weeping tears of pure relief. A powerful emotional bond had formed among the six students who had previously been so self-absorbed. The night of horror had stripped away their ugly flaws, but this dawn united them as redeemed human beings.
"Starting today... we have to change," Arin said between her sobs. "We can't ignore people anymore. We can't mock or look down on anyone ever again."
"I promise," Dinda chimed in quickly. "First thing today, I'm going to the dean's office. I'm going to withdraw that formal complaint letter. Even if... even if it's too late for Professor Danu, I still have to clear his name on this campus."
"Me too," Gani added, his eyes resolute. "I'm deleting all those stupid prank videos from the batch group chat. I'm going to find Professor Danu's home address... I want to apologize directly to his family, or at least visit his grave."
"That's a good choice, Gani," Reno said, offering a faint smile. "Come on, let's get out of here. Our first step starts outside this room."
With steps that felt infinitely lighter, the six students walked side by side out of Classroom 3B. The third-floor corridor that had felt like a cursed, bottomless labyrinth last night now looked like an ordinary university hallway in the early morning—quiet, serene, and illuminated by bright morning sunlight. They descended the emergency stairs at a relaxed pace, chatting softly about how wonderful it felt to breathe fresh morning air.
However, the moment they stepped out of the building's main lobby and onto the front courtyard, Reno's steps ground to a sudden halt.
"Hey... wait a second," Reno said, furrowing his brow as he shielded his eyes from the morning glare.
"What's wrong, Reno?" asked Vanya, walking beside him.
The scene in the front courtyard that morning felt unnaturally chaotic. Instead of the quiet atmosphere typical of a Saturday morning on campus, the parking area and main entrance were crowded with a dense throng of people. Students from other departments who seemed to have just arrived, several faculty members, and campus janitorial staff had formed a human barricade.
What made Reno's heart suddenly hammer against his ribs was the sight at the very center of the crowd.
Three police cruisers were parked with their doors wide open. Beside them stood a white ambulance, its blue and red emergency lights still flashing wildly, casting flickering reflections against the campus perimeter walls. Bright yellow police tape marked a perimeter around the landscaped garden near the main flagpole.
"Why is it so crowded? Was there a brawl last night?" Gani stepped forward, trying to peer over the crowd in confusion.
"A brawl this early in the morning? No way, Gani. Look, there's an ambulance too," Arin replied, the anxiety she thought she had left behind slowly creeping back into her chest.
Dinda walked behind them, staring at the crowd with a heavy sense of foreboding. "I have a bad feeling about this... Why are there so many police officers?"
Reno strained his ears. Above the dull hum of the idling emergency vehicles, he could hear the sound of several female students weeping up front. A few senior professors were speaking with pale faces to a police officer who was taking notes on a clipboard.
"Come on, let's take a closer look," Gani urged, his curiosity reaching a peak.
The six of them walked toward the crowd. Strangely, as they passed several students they recognized in the outer hallway, not a single person turned to look or greet them. Everyone was fixated on the center point behind the police line, their expressions filled with utter horror and shock.
Reno squeezed through a gap in the crowd, trying to catch a glimpse of what the hazmat-suited medical examiners and police officers were working on. A bright orange body bag lay flat on the manicured grass of the campus garden.
Yet it was not the body bag itself that made Reno's breath catch in his throat.
Beside the half-zipped body bag, several pieces of evidence had been collected by the forensic team onto a small folding table. Resting there was a worn, tattered leather briefcase, several exam papers soaked with morning dew, and a small white plastic bottle that was... horrifyingly familiar.
Reno's eyes dilated in absolute shock. His entire body went rigid, cold as ice.
"Reno... what do you see?" Vanya whispered, touching his suddenly tense arm.
Reno couldn't answer. His throat was locked tight by a wave of confusion and terror that slammed violently into his brain. Bizarre questions spun wildly in his head. Why was there an ambulance on campus? Why were those items here? Didn't the vision happen inside Professor Danu's house?
At that exact moment, a campus janitor standing nearby whispered to his colleague in a trembling voice, "It's horrific, man... To think he passed away like that right here."
Hearing those words, every remaining trace of color drained instantly from the six students' faces. They looked at one another, their eyes filled with deep, terrifying confusion. Something was terribly wrong. A horrifying reality was waiting to tear the remnants of their peaceful dawn to shreds.
