The Underrated Son-in-Law
12. Rock Bottom
The night following the gala at the Grand Sapphire became the darkest night in the history of the Wijaya family. At the hospital, Mr. Wijaya lay helpless in a bed, having suffered a mild heart attack brought on by severe shock. Meanwhile, Mrs. Ratna sat in the waiting area, still wearing her disheveled gala dress, staring blankly at the corridor floor with hollow eyes.
Yet, the nightmare was far from over. Mrs. Ratna's phone rang endlessly. Notification after notification flooded her screen, bringing news far more terrifying than anything she could have imagined.
"Mother..." Bella approached, her face pale with exhaustion, but her eyes sharp. "My credit card was declined. Every bank account in my name... has been frozen."
Mrs. Ratna frantically pulled out her phone to log into her corporate banking app. Error. A brief pop-up message appeared on the screen: Access Denied. All associated assets have been seized pursuant to an executive order from Nexus Global.
"No... that’s impossible!" Mrs. Ratna shrieked, drawing the eyes of everyone in the hospital corridor. "This must be a mistake! Call the bank! Call our lawyers!"
"Our lawyers have resigned, Mother," Bella cut in flatly. "They said Aris bought out their retainers so they would stop representing us."
In a single night, Aris had executed his plan with ruthless perfection. He hadn't just seized the company; he had severed the Wijayas' financial lifeline entirely. Personal accounts, emergency funds, even the savings set aside for Bella's education—gone. Aris had leveraged his legal authority to freeze all access to their funds under the guise of an audit into Mr. Wijaya’s long-standing tax manipulation.
Three days later.
The Wijaya family's luxury sedan was repossessed by the leasing company right in front of the hospital doors. They truly had nothing left. Mr. Wijaya, who had regained consciousness but remained frail, was forced to check out because they couldn't cover the medical bills.
"Father, what do we do now?" Bella asked, holding a single canvas bag containing a few changes of clothes.
Mr. Wijaya could only hang his head. His pride had been crushed into dust. Without wealth, without a company, and without a respected family name, they were nothing more than helpless, vulnerable old people.
"I have an acquaintance," Mr. Wijaya whispered in a trembling voice. "A rental property on the outskirts of town. It’s the only place we can afford with the cash left in your mother's purse."
The house was an ancient structure in a rundown slum where the alleyways were cramped and flooded whenever it rained. The walls were cracked, the roof was covered in mold, and the foul stench of clogged drains served as a constant greeting every time the door swung open.
The moment they arrived, Mrs. Ratna went hysterical. "I refuse to live here! This is a rat's nest! Aris! That bastard is going to pay for this! I’m going to sue him!"
"Shut up, Mother!" Bella snapped. "Aris won't care! We have nothing left to sue him with. Get a grip on reality!"
They stepped inside the unit, which consisted of a single bedroom and a cramped common area. There was no furniture, no air conditioning—only a thin mattress laid directly on the bare floor. The opulent lifestyle they had bragged about for decades had vanished into thin air, replaced by stinging dust and suffocating poverty.
In the corner of the room, Bella sat slumped against the damp wall. Her thoughts drifted to Aris. She remembered how he used to bring her warm water late at night, how patiently he listened to her mother's endless complaints, and how he always made sure Bella had everything she needed.
In the past, I had everything and you had nothing, Aris. Now, you are the king of the world, and I... I don't even have a decent roof over my head, Bella thought bitterly.
Suddenly, a sharp knock rattled the front door. Mrs. Ratna rushed to open it, clinging to the desperate hope that it might be someone bringing good news or cash. However, standing in the doorway was a neatly dressed courier wearing a Nexus Global emblem.
"Mrs. Bella?" the courier asked.
"Yes?" Bella replied softly.
"I was instructed to deliver this to you," the courier said, handing her a small box.
Once the courier left, Bella opened the box. Inside lay an old photograph—a simple picture from their civil wedding ceremony a year ago. On the back of the photo was a piece of handwriting she knew all too well:
'In our old house, you made me sleep on the floor for a year because I was poor. Now, feel what it's like to live in a place not fit for a dog. Enjoy your new home.'
Bella crumpled the photo in her grip. Her heart no longer just ached; it turned cold with a dark, simmering desire for revenge. Aris really was leaving them no way out. He wanted to see them broken down to the absolute bare minimum.
"What is that?" Mrs. Ratna asked, her eyes lighting up with greed, hoping it was money.
Bella quickly hid the photo behind her back. "Just an overdue bill, Mother."
She walked out onto the muddy porch, staring up at the overcast night sky. She realized then that Aris wasn't just destroying her family; he was forcing her to grow into someone stronger—or someone far more ruthless.
"You want me to suffer, Aris?" Bella whispered into the night wind. "Fine. Let’s see if you can keep winning this game, or if one day, you'll regret creating a monster like me."
In the distance, behind the tinted windows of a black Rolls-Royce parked in the shadows, Aris watched the dilapidated house through a pair of binoculars. He saw Bella standing on the porch. An agonizing pang of guilt tore through his chest, but he forced his hands to grip the steering wheel firmly.
"Sir," Andi’s voice came from the front seat. "Should we arrange for some subtle assistance?"
Aris lowered the binoculars. "No. Let her taste the bitterness of life. It is the only way she will understand that her former world was nothing more than an illusion built on the suffering of others. When she is ready... when she is strong enough... only then will we move on to the next phase."
The luxury car glided silently into the darkness, leaving Bella behind to fight for her very survival come tomorrow morning.
