The Underrated Son-in-Law
13. Traces Left in the Dust
The days spent in the cramped slum felt like an endless nightmare. Bella was forced to learn how to do things she had never imagined before: washing clothes by hand in a plastic bucket, cooking rice on a kerosene stove that constantly sputtered out, and dealing with noisy neighbors. Her father remained bedridden and frail on a thin mattress, while her mother spent her days weeping over their fallen status in the corner of the room.
Yet, amid the physically draining labor, Bella’s thoughts never strayed far from one name: Aris.
She refused to believe that the Aris she knew—the man who bought her medicine whenever she fell ill, the man who tirelessly massaged her feet after she wore high heels all day—could truly transform into a cold-blooded monster who threw them into this pit. There had to be something missing. There had to be a reason behind everything he did.
One rainy night, as torrential downpours battered the tin roof of the shanty, Bella remembered a small wooden box Aris had brought with him when he first moved into the Wijaya mansion. The box had been left behind in the storage room of her old home, which was now under bank seizure. Using what little cash she had left from selling her wedding ring, Bella bribed one of the estate guards to let her sneak inside and retrieve a few personal items.
After hours of sifting through piles of leftover clutter in the cold, dusty storage room, Bella finally unearthed the wooden box buried beneath a stack of old rags.
With trembling hands, she unlocked the small clasp. Inside lay neither gold nor legal deeds. It was a leather-bound journal with peeling edges.
Bella flipped to the first page. Aris’s neat, firm handwriting greeted her eyes:
'January, Day 1 at the Wijaya house. They insulted me at the doorstep. Bella said nothing. My heart hurts a little, but seeing her smile when she isn't around her parents makes it all worth it. I will endure this.'
Bella held her breath. Her fingers turned the next page.
'March, Day 60. I just finished washing their bedsheets. Mrs. Ratna threw dirty water on the floor, claiming I was incompetent. I could only smile. Bella asked me if I was tired. I lied to her and said I was fine. I didn't want her to feel guilty for being unable to stand up to them.'
Page after page, tears began to pool and spill over Bella’s cheeks. The book wasn't just a diary; it was a chronicle of agony that Aris had borne entirely alone. There were entries detailing how Aris often skipped dinner because the family refused to leave him food, and how he secretly worked late-night manual labor shifts just to buy health supplements for Bella’s frequent migraines.
'July, Day 200. Today is Bella’s birthday. I saved up for three months to buy her that gold necklace. But when I presented it to her, Mrs. Ratna snatched it away, saying it was trash unfit for her daughter. Bella cried in her room. I stood outside her door, helpless against my own rage. I swore to myself that one day, I would buy out their entire company just so Bella could have anything she desired without ever being degraded again.'
Bella closed the journal, her chest tightening painfully. The air caught in her throat. For an entire year, that man had endured systematic torture—swallowing every insult and digesting every ounce of pain—solely to prove his love. And what had Bella done? She had stayed silent. She had become an accomplice to his torment through her passive silence.
"I was such a fool..." Bella sobbed in the pitch-black storage room.
She flipped to the final entry, dated exactly one day before Aris decided to walk away from it all:
'November, Day 365. Today is our first wedding anniversary. I have prepared everything. I will reveal my true identity tonight. I will take Bella away from this house, far from the parents who are destroying her soul. I love her dearly. I only hope she still holds a tiny piece of her heart for me after everything we've been through.'
Bella collapsed onto the cold storage floor. The journal's pages were soaked with her tears. All this time, she had assumed Aris was weak—a man without self-respect who let himself be trampled on. She couldn't have been more wrong. Aris was the strongest man she had ever known, one who sacrificed his own dignity to shield the woman he loved.
Bella clutched the journal tightly against her chest. The guilt that had been gnawing at her soul morphed into a new emotion: raw determination.
She finally understood. Aris wasn't seeking revenge merely to destroy them out of spite. He was breaking down the figurative prison her parents had locked her inside. He wanted Bella to stand on her own two feet, free from the shadows of her family’s greed.
"You want me to change, Aris?" Bella whispered into the silence of the storage room. "You want me to see the world as it really is? Fine. I will prove to you that your year of sacrifice was not in vain."
Bella tucked the journal safely into her bag. She would no longer be the timid, powerless girl. She would rise from the dust—not as a daughter of the Wijaya family, but as her true self. And she would seek out Aris—not to beg for mercy, but to stand beside him as an equal, or perhaps, to win back his heart the way he deserved.
