The Underrated Son-in-Law
19. Cold Traces Upon the Page
That night, a storm raged not only outside the penthouse windows, but also deep within the souls of Aris and Bella. Aris emerged from his study after hours of immersing himself in corporate files he no longer cared about. He found Bella still sitting in the exact same spot on the living room floor, frozen like a wooden statue stripped of its spirit.
"Are you satisfied now?" Aris asked, his voice as cold as ice freshly frozen at the poles. "You saved them. You won with your naive goodness. But look at yourself now, Bella. Do you feel happy?"
Bella looked up. Her swollen, tear-stained eyes met Aris’s with an unreadable expression—a tragic mix of deep disappointment and profound exhaustion. "Does happiness have to be purchased with cruelty, Aris? If becoming like you is the condition for obtaining happiness, then I would rather never have it at all."
Aris clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white. "I built this empire for you. I crushed our enemies for you. I cast aside my own humanity so you would never have to feel the pain I felt a year ago. But you... you don't appreciate a single thing I've done."
"I appreciate you, Aris! But I cannot accept your methods!" Bella cried out, her voice cracking under the weight of her tears. "You love your own way of loving me, not me for who I actually am!"
Aris went silent. Those words struck straight at the center of his chest, sharper than any bullet that had ever grazed Bella’s arm. He realized a bitter truth: perhaps it was true that he had lost himself in the relentless pursuit of vengeance.
"Perhaps you are right," Aris said softly, his voice now devoid of any warmth. "I have lost who I am. And perhaps my presence here will only bring you further suffering."
Without another word, Aris turned around. He didn't walk toward the bedroom; instead, he strode directly to the front exit. Bella called out his name, but Aris didn't look back. The penthouse door clicked shut with a heavy, final thud.
The next morning, Bella woke up with a crushing sense of dread. The bedroom beside hers was empty. There were no footsteps, no rich scent of Aris’s signature morning coffee filling the air.
She rushed toward Aris’s study, but the door was locked tight. With Andi’s assistance, the backup key was used to open it. The room was immaculately tidy, as if no living person had set foot inside for ages. On top of the pristine desk lay a single white envelope sealed with black wax.
With trembling hands, Bella opened it.
Bella,
I am leaving to clear my head and oversee matters in London. Perhaps for a very long time.
I realized something last night: I was so consumed with shaping your world into a perfect place for you that I forgot you had desires of your own.
Perhaps I am the monster you spoke of. Perhaps my world is far too dark for you. I will no longer force you to understand me. I have arranged everything for you—your safety, your fortune, and your protection. Legally, all of it has been handed over to you.
Do not come looking for me. I will try to find the lost Aris—the Aris you married. If fate decrees that our paths cross again, I hope that by then, I will have become a man worthy of winning your heart back.
Goodbye.
Aris.
The letter slipped from Bella’s fingers. Her world went completely silent. She sprinted to the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out toward the distant helipad just in time to see a Nexus Global private jet ascending into the sky, breaking through the clouds toward the far horizon.
Bella collapsed to her knees. She had just realized that while she had won the argument, she had lost the most important war of all: the battle to hold onto her love. Aris was gone, taking with him a piece of her soul that might never return.
She clutched the letter tightly to her chest, feeling the fleeting warmth remaining on the paper slowly fade away, replaced by the bitter, agonizing cold of solitude she was now forced to endure alone.
