Naura's Tears

30. Diandra Is Sick

When construction began on Sunday, Diandra was nowhere to be seen that day. Adam felt like she was usually very energetic. Why was she suddenly gone? Maybe she was doing something else?

Adam was curious and took out his phone to call Diandra. Who knows, maybe Diandra had forgotten to watch the start of their project to create a green design and business at Kenanga Lake.

A connection was made, and a hoarse voice came from the other end. Diandra's voice sounded heavy; had she been crying?

"What's wrong with your voice, Diandra?" Adam asked curiously.

There was a moment of silence. "I... I'm not feeling well, Adam. Maybe I'm so tired, my body is shivering, and my voice is so deep."

"Have you taken your medicine? Have you seen a doctor? Or should I take you?"

A small, though heavy, laugh came from the other end of the line. "You, Adam, are like a mother who worries about her child. Have you now become a foster mother who is busy when her child is sick?"

Diandra's hoarse, playful laugh could still be heard. Adam felt like he was being teased. Indeed, Diandra's life was always full of joy. Even though she had experienced the same helpless life as he.

"I'll come to the hotel," Adam hung up the phone. He already felt something with Diandra. For some reason, it was as if they were connected inherently. Either by a shared fate or a shared destiny.

Adam left the project for a moment and headed to the hotel. He got on his motorcycle and, upon arriving, headed to Diandra's room. Aunt Jamilah was there. Adam had brought some fruit to give to Diandra.

Aunt Jamilah asked Adam to stay where she was and not leave; it wasn't good for a man and a woman to be alone together. Diandra sat in the hotel living room. The room they had rented was large and had a living room.

"Are you feeling better? You must be tired, right?"

"You know, I'm a grown man, Adam. I can take care of myself. I'll be better tomorrow because I've taken my medicine."

"I hope you get well soon, because our business development needs you to ensure it goes according to plan."

"How can you trust me so much, Adam? I haven't been able to see or walk all this time. I was just imagining it," Diandra asked, curious, as if Adam was making excuses.

"No, Diandra. You're very important to our project. If you haven't seen this world, your imagination will be clean, so you'll definitely produce amazing results!" Adam beamed with excitement, smiling.

"Are you insulting me or complimenting me, Adam? Your joke isn't funny!"

Diandra felt comforted and even felt as if her pain was diminished by Adam's presence and his unfunny joke.

From the corner of her chair, Aunt Jamilah simply smiled, watching the two of them chat animatedly. She simply prayed that they would one day marry and be happy. Hopefully, no one knows what fate will bring. God is in control of all affairs.

"Have you had breakfast?" Adam asked again, for some reason feeling very protective when he saw others sick. He didn't want anyone else to be sick and experience the feelings he had felt for several years: curled up in pain and helpless to do anything. "I've taken my medicine, Adam. Of course, I've had breakfast. You sound like a doctor."

Adam shook his head. Diandra sat up, her face a little pale. Of course, she was exhausted, but for some reason, Adam felt happy to have Diandra in his village and close to him. Even though he had broken his promise.

A promise to God that somehow allowed him to continue his life, following the oath he had sworn in front of Naura, in front of Lake Kenanga.

"Have you eaten, Adam?" Diandra asked back. She knew Adam from Syarif and his mother. Adam often forgot to eat because when he was busy, he would do his best, often forgetting about his own needs.

"I... I..." Adam was at a loss for an answer, as he had truly forgotten he hadn't had breakfast in his enthusiasm for creating and transforming Lake Kenanga.

"You definitely haven't had breakfast, Adam. You always make sure everyone else remembers and stays healthy. But you forget about yourself. You really are."

Diandra couldn't believe it; Mrs. Halimah was right about her son. It really was.

"Sorry, Diandra. I really forgot to eat breakfast."

Diandra laughed at Adam's childishness. Even though he was wise and mature, sometimes his childish side showed. Adam looked cute as he scratched his head, which definitely wasn't itchy.

"I'll make you some food in a moment. I think I can fry an egg," Diandra said. However, Aunt Jamilah immediately stood up as she was about to.

"No, Miss Diandra, Miss is sick. I'll make it in a moment."

"But Aunt..."

"Never mind, just a moment."

Aunt Jamilah excused herself to go to the back room to fry something. The hotel Diandra rented was quite large, like a rented house. There was a small kitchen behind the living room. "I'm sorry, it's just a bother," Adam felt uncomfortable because Aunt Jamilah was busy.

"So, Adam, if you want to advise people, you have to take care of yourself first. Take care of your health, Adam; that's important. I saw..." Diandra's voice paused, "I saw Mrs. Halimah so happy when you were healthy. It was like she was seeing heaven before her eyes."

Adam's eyes met Diandra's for a moment. He was right. Really! All this time, his helplessness had caused his mother untold grief. How could he not? She had cared for a sick child for years and was powerless to do anything.

The mother who raised him certainly felt the pain he was suffering. Pain from love; surely his mother loved him more than all the love in the world.

Adam seemed to be the one who could bear to see his mother grieve over her helplessness in facing reality. And his mother, merely a victim of his own helplessness. "You're right, Diandra. All this time, I've only been a burden to my mother. I've made her sad for years. All of that shouldn't have happened. I was weak and stupid!"

A tear trickled down Adam's cheek as he remembered it all. He felt like the most useless person in the world for letting his mother suffer every day.

"It's okay, Adam, it's all in the past. Now, we just live our lives and give smiles to those who love us."

Diandra nodded at Adam with a smile, and Adam quickly wiped away his tears. Diandra was right, it's all in the past, and what matters most is what we can do today.

"You're right, Diandra. We must look to the future."
