The Hidden Artery

91. Inspection at the Old Harbor

The sun had completely dipped beneath the western horizon, leaving the city's night sky painted in deep, starlit hues. In the city's old harbor sector—an abandoned industrial district tucked away at the northernmost coastal edge—the night air felt biting and profoundly still. A brisk sea breeze swept across the docks, carrying a heavy tang of salt mixed with a slow-creeping fog blanketing the weathered, rusted piers.

Two armored tactical vehicles bearing the insignia of the Boundary Monitoring Department rolled to a halt near the pitch-black warehouse number four. From inside the vehicles, Zulfa and Naya stepped out clad in standard tactical field jackets, equipped with portable frequency scanners in hand.

"Based on the monitoring satellite's data readouts from this afternoon, the anomaly coordinates sit right around the old container loading dock," Naya said, stepping carefully across the cracked concrete while tracking her glowing blue handheld tablet screen. "The electromagnetic radiation levels are very low, but the spectral fluctuations are an exact match for the alien galaxy wave residue we encountered in the subterranean cave last week."

Zulfa walked beside her, scanning the surroundings with alert eyes to ensure his protective sensors remained active. "Stay vigilant, Naya. This place has been completely abandoned for months since The Foundation Council fell. If an extraterrestrial object is bleeding cosmic energy here, odds are it's a piece of their classified research that never got cleared out."

Naya glanced briefly at Zulfa, chuckling softly as she zipped her jacket up tighter against the biting ocean wind. "Well, talk about a rocky start on your very first day as Head of the Boundary Monitoring Department—dragging your own girlfriend out on a midnight inspection of a spooky abandoned harbor. How terribly romantic, Engineer Arditama."

Zulfa turned, smiling warmly at the playful tease amid the tense operational atmosphere. He halted for a beat, reaching out with his left arm to pull Naya close by the shoulder, drawing her slightly nearer to shield her against the gusting sea wind.

"Who says this isn't romantic?" Zulfa countered in a soft, teasing murmur. "When else does a genius research assistant get to enjoy a midnight date under a starry sky accompanied by the aroma of rusted docks and quantum anomaly scanners?"

Naya let out an amused snort, resting her head against Zulfa's shoulder for a brief second before straightening up with a feigned serious expression. "What kind of date has a backdrop straight out of a murder mystery thriller? But... I have to admit, walking alone with you in a deserted spot like this always has its own unique charm."

"Our scanner sensors show we're getting very close to the epicenter," Zulfa said, shifting his focus back to the handheld device in his right hand. "Though I'm glad... amid all the bureaucratic hustle of our new department, we can still hit the field together like old times."

Naya smiled sweetly, a warmth in her gaze that made the chilly old harbor night feel infinitely cozier. "I'll follow you wherever duty calls, Zul—whether it's designing a seal deep within the earth's belly or checking out a haunted old warehouse at the edge of town."

The two resumed walking down the narrow alleyways between towering stacks of rusted shipping containers. The thickening night fog restricted visibility to a mere radius of several meters, illuminated solely by the tactical flashlights in their hands.

Suddenly, the scanner screen in Zulfa's grip hummed quietly.

Beep... beep...

Zulfa raised a hand, signaling Naya to halt. "Hold up. The frequency readings are spiking sharply."

Naya immediately raised her device, sweeping her sensor toward the stack of aged containers blocking their path. "The frequency's coming from behind container stack number eighty-nine at the pier corner, Zul!"

They advanced slowly, slipping through a narrow gap between corrugated metal walls corroded by time. As they broke out into the rearmost corner of the pier—which dropped straight down into the surging high-tide sea—a bizarre sight greeted their eyes.

Right there, a massive weathered shipping container appeared half-sunk into the pier's concrete foundation, as though the concrete had melted and fused unnaturally with the metal hull.

More astonishing still, across every inch of the rusted container's exterior walls ran intricate geometric patterns glowing with active anomaly crystal radiance—pulsing rhythmically in a mesmerizing blue-purple hue while broadcasting an intensely dense wave of cosmic energy.

Zulfa stepped forward cautiously, approaching the container doors. He pressed his spectral scanner sensor straight against the surface.

"Incredible..." Zulfa whispered in awe, his eyes widening at the incoming data stream. "This container... it isn't just a standard storage crate. It's an intergalactic hybrid tech containment capsule."

Naya stood right behind Zulfa, staring with a mix of dread and wonder at the pulsing anomaly crystals throbbing before them. "Zul, those crystals... their energy is still live and active. What on earth is sealed inside this old container?"
